I have recently purchased a 1983 S/K and trailer for $2250. It has cleaned up very nice after a lot of scrubbing but needs some work here and there. I have aquired a mast off a older 25 that had sunk because of the swing keel. The original had one of the pivot holes cut through the bottom and seemed to be slightly deformed on one side. The tabernacle also was bent and off its mount. I think I will need to change the metal spreader attachment from the newer mast to replace the cast spreader on the older one. I'm not sure if anyone has ever done this but I'm going to give it a try. I'm also beginning to be a little wary of the 1500 lb swing keel. I live in North Eastern PA and will be mooring my boat in the upper Chesapeake on the North East River. I was wondering where the best place is to get Catalina parts, and is there a Catalina 25 group in the upper Chesapeake Bay area. I have learned a lot reading the forum and the tech areas. I thank you in advance for any help or suggestions you may have. BTW, yes I have joined the association.

Denny,

Welcome to the Catalina club!

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">I was wondering where the best place is to get Catalina parts...?<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

Catalina Direct

I recommend ordering Catalina Direct's Catalina 25 Handbook, which is essentially a parts catalog and information resource for our boats. It is only $9.95(plus $3.95 shipping) and is money well spent. Not only does Catalina Direct sell parts for the C25, they are also quite knowledgeable and can sometimes offer advice and suggestions to those with questions. If you are a C25 owner its only a matter of time before you call their toll free number.

For everyday sailboat parts and stuff, I like SailNet. Their prices are hard to beat and I don't have to leave the house. They used to have free shipping, but now I see that it only applies to orders over $100.00 so group your purchases to save some money. I've replaced most of the lines on my boat from their periodic closeouts on rope which have yielded savings usually around 70%.

Another place to look for blocks and other sailboat hardware is Garhauer. Their prices are very reasonable when compared to Harken, Schaefer,...etc.

Those are just a couple of resources, but the best one is this forum here at the C25/250 National Association website. Just about every question you may have can be answered here, all you need to do is ask.

Again, welcome aboard Denny.

There is a grass roots movement to begin a fleet in the upper Chesapeake Bay area. Look for, and monitor, posts by Osmepneo (Don Peet, C25/C250 National Association Secretary) regarding the formation of new fleets.

Welcome aboard, and thank you for joining the Association.

Welcome Denny, glad to have you on board.
Isn't fixing up an old boat fun? It really doesn't cost much to do that at all (yeah, right)
I also second the recommendation about Catalina Direct.
May I also suggest that if you boat didn't come with a manual you print the one out which is in our tech tips section. Put it in a three ring binder. It has come in handy for me.
I used to own a Catalina 22 swing. I got the shim kit from Catalina Direct and installed it on my swing and it helped eliminate some of the keel klunk. I now have a wing, so I don't know if this would help on the 25, but it seems that it should. Waddya say you swingers out there? I also highly recommend that you inspect the keel cable for wear and replace immediately if needed.
Good luck. You made a wise purchase.

If you are going to keep that boat and sail that boat you should put the wing on her. With the price you paid for that boat you could change over to a wing, (and address your reservations about mooring it) and get way more out of it than you put in it anytime you want to sell it. You could even pull the trigger on this quote:
<i>From: "Averill, Don" &lt;daverill@lefiell.com&gt;

Subject: HOPPER2964.rtf quote for Catalina 25 mast and boom

Frank,

This is the quote you requested for a new mast and boom for your Catalina
25.
$2624.38
The mast is complete with 4 sheave mast head providing for 4 internal
halyards, spreaders and welded mounts, fixed mast step, compression tubes,
through bolts, tangs and pins, cleats, and gooseneck with integral reef
horns. A PVC conduit is installed to allow the installation of wiring and
lights on the mast. The boom has a 3 sheave boom end exit box, and is
internally rigged for the outhaul. The boom is configured for end boom
sheeting. they are finished with Sterling linear polyurethane. We offer many
colors and shades of white to choose from.

What type of tabernacle bracket and through bolt assembly do you have? Will
it require a compression tube with doublers in the mast base? Do you want us
to provide the wiring and lights for an anchor light and combination deck
and steamer light? Do you want us to provide a VHF radio antenna cable in
the conduit?

After you have had a chance to review the quote, contact me for any
questions you may have.

Thank you,

Don Averill

Welcome, Denny!

Just to be sure I understand your intent... If your newer mast has the shiny welded stainless sockets and the older mast has the cast aluminum ones, you definitely should make that change.

The Catalina Direct handbook is a worthy recommendation, as is membership in this association. In total, that's the best $30 you'll spend on the boat!

In the Mainsheet magazine I got (and you will get soon) this past week there was an article about doing some repairs on a bigger boat. The guy described where the word boat comes from: BOAT stands for "bring out another thousand", as in $$$. But after awhile you'll learn how to go into West Marine and save money on their specials (hahaha). Most people in line there will laugh at you if you try to leave there with just one item under $100. An old guy on our dock said if you go in to buy one thing, get that item, and then start to look around, you will spend around $7.50 PER MINUTE from that point on. I "researched" his hypothesis last Tuesday and it was more like $7.23. So enjoy your BOATing experience. Seriously, there just isn't many other things on this earth that are more satisfying than sailing....well, I can think of one right now that would be more any time (hehe). Glad you are a part of this group. You will really enjoy the help you can get here. Ask lots of questions. Happy sailing.

Hi Denny,

Good to see you posting on the forum. I am sure you will get much of the information you need for all your repairs right here.

Catalina Direct is a great resource. The prices are in line and they can often offer advice. Some items are still available from Catalina but they are not as responsive, not as friendly and the price is often higher.

I am finally putting together all the costs involved with my swing to wing conversion. I received the bill from the boatyard for their portion and was pleasantly surprised. Will be posting the costs in the next couple of days.

Thanks for eMailing the photos of your boat. By the looks of your pictures and your comments you got a great deal.

please send your web master the pictures of the wing conversion and we'll make it into a fully illustrated tech tip!

Even if they're just snap shots, email us and we'll send you the mailing address (we have a scanner).

Welcome to the Chsapeake! I have never seen the burgee flown when i've been out on the bay, 2 others from this association are docked at marinas next to mine. i have also met a guy who has a swinger who docks it in the potomac river and has never had a problem with the swing. he docks the boat with the keel completely up. i know some people dissagree with that practice and I told him so, however, he insists he's been doing it for years and has not had a problem.
Replacing the spreader brackets on your new mast is a great idea, that was one of the first modifications i made on gypsy, it's good to do it while you have your mast down. also check the shrods and make sure you don't have any "meat hooks". those can be replaced too before you raise the new mast.

You'll love sailing the Bay, occasionally in the afternoons winds get up to 20 knts. it's nice because the sailing gets exciting and all the motor boaters, "stink pots" return to port.

Jim,

I have alot of photos of the swing to wing conversion as well as all the costs and time involved. As soon as I can get my work life under control I will post photos and comments, and I intend to work on a tech tip. All the help from the forum really helped me and I hope I can pass on some help to others.

My photos are digital so I know they will be fairly easy to work with. If I encounter trouble working up a good tech tip I will get in touch,

Thanks
