I'm trying to come up with some info. I have been researching the towing weight of the 250wk vs. the 250wb. I'm trying to see if my 2002 GMC Envoy is capable of towing either/both models. I have a 2wd Vortec inline 6 which puts out 270hp & 275 lbs of torque at 3600rpm. maximum trailering weight is 6,400 lbs. I won't be swapping trucks so the boat has to fall within my towing range, I seem to come up with conflicting info on the towing weights of the 2 models. I'm looking for total boat/trailer/gear weight. This info might take the choice of which model to get out of my hands. My wife and I would be towing the boat around. Either to the lakes north of Phoenix, or to the Sea of Cortez south of us. (we live in Tucson). Can anybody help me out ?
Boat empty, 2400#. Trailer lists 6000# gross, 4700# load, so tare is 1300#. Motor, stuff, and water is variable, but it adds up. Don't ask why, but a while ago I weighed what was on board in personal effects. Step on the scale before you board. Before I knew it I was up to 600#. I've added more since. So for a round number I use 1000#.
Total:1000+1300+2300= 4600# Well within your towing limit. The wing keel adds, I believe, 1200# or so, so that would put you at 5800. That, in my eyes, would be pushing it. Not so much with regard to horse power, but more in relation to your wheel base. Stability is the name of the game here.
Finally, if you read the owners manual carefully, you have to take tongue weight and load in the vehicle (people, more stuff) into consideration. Figure a tongue weight of, ideally, 460# on the WB, and 580# on the WK and see how that fits in.
Last Suburban I had was the towing vehicle for a 24' enclosed cargo trailer which we used to move. I pushed the limit. (we have a lot of stuff) and loaded it up to the max numerous times. After that summer I could tell it took its toll. Even if it "fits", doensn't mean it doesn't cause a lot of wear and tear. I use our (new) Suburban to pull the WB, it feels good, not strained, and I think the car will last. I'm not sure if I'd like to pull around the extra 1200 or so #, in that respect. With an Envoy I'd be even more hesitant.
I have a 97 250 water ballast. I have weighed it at truck scales. Boat, trailer, outboard, some gear came to about 4500 lbs. I tow with a silverado with a 5.3 vortec in Colorado at 7000 feet with no problem. At this elevation, I am glad that I have the WB.
I was just down at The Sea of Cortez. Great place. The lower elevation will make it much easier to tow. I did move the axel to get the tongue weight where I wanted it.
I think you need a tow vehicle with a minimum tow capacity of 7000lbs to tow a wing keel. Most full size SUV’s fall into this range. My wk on trailer weights in fully loaded with outboard and gear for four at 6256lbs.
