Is there any reasonable alternative to Catalina Direct for replacement parts or upgrades for the Catalina Yacht product? I'm doing some work on my 83 25SK and can find no alternatives. Though Catalina Direct appears to be a pretty good source, I like to have options. From all I've seen, it appears Catalina Yachts themselves aren't interested in marketing parts/info for their product.

Welcome.
I have a very knowlegable dealer here in town and the only advantage to using him is he has different ideas on how to rig things. His prices are higher and if you are looking for Catalina specific parts they will all be the same where ever you get them, price is the issue. CD really does rock.
Your site is great and you boat looks great too. I have never seen a split bimini before.

What specifically are you looking for?

A lot of the parts, like the old bow lights, are generic boat parts and can be found at different places. Most blocks and rigging can be gotten anywhere. Cushions can be made locally and sails just about anywhere.

The point is, it depends on the part you need and whether it was just specific to that particular boat.

Troy,

I've bought a number of original equipment as well as upgrade parts directly from the Catalina factory. I found them to be helpful and of course very knowledgable. I think their prices are very reasonable. They support my 1979 C-25 like it was this year's flagship model. They prefer to handle parts orders via FAX and credit card. I also call to verify and follow up.

As Don mentioned, many boat parts and supplies are generic or industry standard. Also in many cases there are excellent upgrades available from non-OEM sources (Harken, Ronstan, and many, many others). You might want to get ahold of catalogs from West Marine, Defender Industries, SailRite, Annapolis Performance Sailing, etc. Let us know what it is you're looking for, and we'll cheerfully give you a bewildering array of conflicting opinions to chose from!

Garhauer (www.garhauermarine.com) has a lot of stuff for our boats at pretty reasonable prices. However, a recent thread discussed how their customer service isn't too focused on the retail market, but if you know what you want and are willing to guide them through it, they can be a great source.

Many OEM items on our boats, which are also offered by Catalina Direct, are from Garhauer. Several people have found that Catalina Direct is a more helpful source for those procucts, although the price may be slightly higher (but not much). The key advantage with CD is that they know the C-25 in detail, and even adjust their recommendations and products based on your hull number. You may be able to hunt down a better price or even a good alternative product, but you won't go very wrong with CD.

Catalina Direct is the single best source for most parts, even if you have a Boat US or West Marine just down the street like I do. The CD Staff is knowledgable and friendly. You might save a couple of bucks by shopping around, but I figure that's trading sailing time. Sailing time has got to be worth something. Cheers! http://www.catalinadirect.com/

I have owned "Wood Duck" for six seasons and have never purchased a single part from Catalina Direct. Not that I have anything against them, but I have always gone to the source. I have found Catalina Parts very helpful (if you are able to call them Pacific Time outside of the lunch two hours), and Garhauer I have found obliging and full of good information. There is actually surprisingly little on the C25 that is specific to this boat, and what there is is listed in the parts catalog for the boat, available from Catalina parts, and a very worthwhile purchase. I don't doubt that if I continue to own "Wood Duck" for another six seasons, I might call Catalina Direct for some part or other. But they are far from being the only game in town.

You are absolutely right, in fact few things are as fun as establishing a relationship with a manufacturer, it always makes me feel "special". Years ago I would gather all of the catalogs together and take measurements on my Spirit 23. After what was a wonderful and very educational exercise I would order exactly what I wanted and needed. I was in to it and it was fun. The thing that impresses me about CD is the option to bypass all of that. If you order the "internal halyard kit" with the "led back to cabin top" option you will get a kit that contains EVERYTHING you need and it will all fit and work well. That is an amazing service. Is it required? No. Is it a great option? Yes. As it is I am doing the halyard and cabin top bit this winter and only ordered the #7 Lewmar from CD, but I appreciate the ability to make a single phone call and get what I need. If I were a pure newby I would consider it a godsend.
