The Association Officers are about to announce the decision on where the 2004 Nationals will be held. The two locations under consideration are:

Lake Cheney in Wichita, Kansas at the end of June
or
The Columbia River in Portland, Oregon in the middle of July

We are calling for any and all input that you wish to make before a final decision is made. The location will be announced hopefully next week and will be in the Feb. 2004 Mainsheet.
I think Fleet 94 has made a great effort to host a national event that will be well represented. Our newest fleet led by Gary Bruner is active and enthusiastic. I think it will boost the association and be an incentive for other regions to form active local fleets. I think Frank Hopper’s proposal is credible and would be a good mid states regatta but it is time for the west coast to have their chance this coming season. So I suggest we support the Oregon proposal.
Also in the November Mainsheet see Bryan Beamer’s account of racing in the Nationals with his father. These events can bring families and friends together.
If you are not a member of the association you are missing out on the Mainsheet and cannot attend any national regatta. Join today to support this website, receive the Mainsheet, the Tale Tells and be a voting member of one of the best National Associations going

Bryan, According to Yahoo! maps, Syracuse, Indiana (last year's Nationals, as you well know) to Wichita, KS is 827 miles, which you say is "nowhere close".
Interestingly, you seem to think the Nationals HAVE been close to us. Again, Yahoo! says that Salt Lake City is 765 miles from Portland, OR and Long Beach is over 1, 000 miles away. Not exactly in our backyard, I'd say.......
I am not trying to argue, but I think this makes my point. Saying "West Coast" is about as geographically precise as saying "The Mid-West" or "The East Coast". Sites could easily be 1,000 miles or more from another and still be in the same "area" of the country........
BTW: Will you still have a 250 come this summer? I thought you had made clear that you were moving to a larger boat soon.

Before I vote I would like to clear up the use of Spinikers, are the Nationals this year going to use them???? They haven't in the past. If Oregon Says yes and Kansas says No, then I would vote for Kansas as I don't want to drop $800-1200 for a new spiniker to be competative. But no Matter, I'll go where ever it's held.
One more additional thought, The Chicago to Mac race is the same weekend as the Nationals in Oregon Plus the Holland A fleet sail in, these dates are set in stone and many of us Midwest sailors Participate in them. So having to choose between the CHI-MAC race and pulling to Oregon at the same time will be diffacult. As far as parties, it will be hard to beat the CHI-MAC and Holland YC party.
Years ago, some Catalina 25s raced with spinnakers in the nationals. One of them had a full array of custom made laminated sails and 3 different spinnakers to use in differing conditions. By far, most of us don't have that kind of sail inventory, and, while that is to be expected with racing boats, I thought it was inappropriate for C-25s. I suggest no spinnakers. If non-spinnaker boats think they will have to compete against spinnaker boats, it might discourage them from attending. Making all the participants equally competitive will encourage attendance.
AHOY, I live in Washington and vote for Oregon, spoke to Gary about the spinnaker question, he said he had a contgency plan in mind for the vote of the boats to enter, personally I can't keep up with a wing keel boat down wind on wing and wing, so I will be voting for the spinnaker, even though I only have a raggedy crusing chute, of course I will leave it home if the majority wants this to be no flying sails event. But really guys, racers and offshore cruisers use them and we don't???
P.S. AHOY, DAVE, Sorry you can't make it if its in Oregon, you forgot to add "no race" and I bet, It will be prefectly okay for out 2003 CHAMPIOM to bring his 155 MYLAR no wonder the sail budget shudders at the thought of a spinnaker. You Guys are great thanks for all the help over the years and I wish everyone could come to Oregon. If you can please vote "OREGON" Terry & Kathie "LEMATIKE" #789
My vote, for what it's worth, is Oregon, mid-July. Based soley on the fact we will be leaving for British Columbia and the Queen Charolottes around July 9 and if a stop in Oregon for a day or two would let us participate or at least watch part of the nationals, I'd be interested. We have no set schedule to contend with, other than being back in New Mexico by August 13th.
Patrick: Guys like you are why we picked dates in July. We are SO hoping to pick up some C-25 sailors, either on their way to the San Juans for a late July/August cruise, or on their way home after going in June or early July. We would LOVE for you to take a few days and join in. Details to follow.
As for the spinnaker option: we are trying to raise the bar just a touch by offering the spinnaker option. We are in an area where it is customary to fly chutes....especially in an event that is called a "Nationals". However, NO WAY do we want to discourage anyone who does not have, nor won't fly, a chute. If a significant number of entrants doesn't want them, we'll either do without, or have a separate NFS class. But it seems to me that a National Champion of ANY class should be able to fly a spinnaker! I only have an asymmetrical, too, so I would be at a disadvantage to those with a racing chute. Plus...I just have a "fuzzy" bottom (no VC-17)! Come on out and play!!!!!!!!!
We want to see a LOT of boats come from out of area.....since we are on the freeway path to the San Juans, we hoped folks would do both this summer......
Hey I know I should not even vote but what the heck Ill try to be there even if I only own an Alberg. Can I change my vote to the San Juans. I realy hope you decide Oregon. It would be nice to be able to drive down and party with you all.
The wife and I were thinking of going to Lake Tahoe next summer, but quite honestly it wouldn't take much of to change those plans. Mid July works well with the schedule, number 3 child graduates from high school in June. The past few nationals have been pretty early in June for many of us with children in school to travel far.
Hey Ed, I'll print this out for Brigitte. She has been open to a trip to the San Juans, but Oregon is a lot closer. Plus the drive would be a little less costly.
Matt, The San Juans are just a one day drive north of Porland. We would probably incorporate the nationals and a week in the islands. Boy, I love the way that sounds!!!

Nowhere in my comments did I say anything about the Nationals being close to Portland.
I said it was on the west coast. It was not me that said the Nationals should be moved from region to region. I was just quoting the "west coast” region had the Nationals twice in the last 7 years.

Yes I will. My wife decided a bigger boat was not what she really wanted so we bought a 32' 5th wheel instead. Now she is happy and I still have a sailboat so I'm happy.
I vote for Oregon and no spinnakers (I don't even own one!) but I'll pole out my 155% genoa and take you on if necessary... Derek (back home in the good old U.S. of A!)
Make the Oregon race July 8 through 11 and we might be able to do this trip. My wife and I will be doing a family reunion cruise from Vancouver to Alaska (big cruise ship) July 18 through 24. Kansas at the end of June is a long way from So. California. All other nationals have been at the end of the last week of our teaching year....can't just "leave early". As usual, what will be decided will determine whether one can go.... Anyone want to race in Mission Bay this summer? JimB and I raced last weekend. He's pretty fast. Next time I throw up the 150 and show him some transom . Hey, tomorrow? YES
I'm going to stay out of the discussion, because for me it's whether I'm going to drive to Kansas or Washington....either way I'd have to pack a lunch....
But, maybe there is merit in establishing a three year east-central-west rotation to provide some consistency.
I am aware that that would only work if there was someone willing to do the work in every location.
