I have now firmly given up the idea of tying the boat to my lakehouse dock and acquired and moved the boat into a nice little slip.

Last week, as a result of very high winds and low water level viz the dock the boat was beaten against the underside of the dock and 3 stanchions and the stern rail need to be replaced. It also took out a nice 50W Siemens solar panel, but not before punching the stern rail stanchion through the hull (made about a 2*2 inch hole all the way through the wood).

I only carry liability insurance, and before I shell out the money for a new stern rail, I am interested to know if anyone might know where I may obtain parts from used Catalina 25's. I can handle the stanchions new, but I figure the stern rail will be fairly expensive.

Thanks.

Rusty

I think it's going to be a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Several months back there was gentleman parting out a C-25 - most probably bare by now. Someone else on this site was checking into a new style stern rail (actually custom) with seats . . . he might then have a rail left over.

Lesson No 1. Its a heck of a lot cheaper to purchase insurance than its going to be to replace parts and repair the boat. What's 12 or 14 dollars a month ?

If I needed a new stern rail I would change to the split rail that Catalina Direct sells. I do not see any reason for more than a lifeline over the transom, the split rail wraps the two corners. What more do you need. Are you the guy who was wondering what was going to happen to your keel when the water level dropped?

I use the center portion of my stern rail to mount my horseshoe ring. This location keeps it out of the way until it is needed.

Bummer, sounds like the boat really took some hits. One solution might be to use stanchions and life lines all the way around the stern.

If you are replacing several stancions you might consider increasing the height and going to double lifelines.

Turns out I had a lucid moment and actually did take comp/collision insurance! Hurrah!
