Well it works for the Aborigines perhaps it will work for me as well. I flew to the Bahamas for the holidays with the family and was taken with the waters there about. Presently I'm intent on finding out all that is involved with navigating them. To those of the catalina fraternity that have ventured there I'd appreciate such information as you are willing to divulge. In my DREAMSTATE I see myself sailing solo to Florida and then across to Bimini and the Bahamas...or thereabout. I've begun searching the catalogues for charts of the regions involved and thought at the time I'd take a short cut and check in here as well. HELP !

follows that one imagines. Right?)

Dreamstates used to be called pipedreams, which occurred as a fellow packed and lit a pipe of pleasant blend, and contemplated future activities, hopes, and dreams. Now out of fashion, keep the dream alive...ron Orion srsk SW FL (seeing too many doctors to ever have a pipe again), Fair winds

With your Cat 25?
Then you'll probably be motoring most of the way (in the intracoastal) to FLA from NY. You can sail some, but with currents and the narrow waterway, you'll motor a lot too. That is unless you want to go outside, then that's a different story.
From FLA to Bahamas I can't say. Probably very nice with good weather.

Ahoy Val,
I am starting to sypathize with those of you on the hard. Without my motor I can of course go out, but I hesitate as it would be difficult to get back into my slip. Monday I get some info on a Tohatsu 9.8 4 & 2 stroke 25" to replace my stolen Johnson Sailmaster.
As for your Dreamstate, you should talk to Leon. Last year he did a whole month from Cocoa Bch to the east side of the Bahamas solo. When he came up to Jax. to get my old rudder he told me all about it. When I went to the Bimini Is. it was with eleven other Trailer Sailors and we trailered to Homestead, FL and motored across.

Hi Val,

I have been in that DREAMSTATE since reading the Bimini Bunch stories and seeing the pictures. Heck man, I even bought charts.

I'm about at the point where I'll just put a sail on my dinghy and go for it.

I hope, when I am able to get another Cat-25, to do the Bahamas trip.

Keep the dream alive my friend.

For those interested in learning more about the Aboriginal Dreamstate (I've more often seen it referred to as "Dreamtime") I recommend a film called "The Last Wave" by Aussie director Peter Weir. A good watch... affecting and thought provoking, as are many Australian films (Phar Lap, My Brilliant Career, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Walkabout etc.)

Very different fare from the usual "Crocodile" stuff.

My own Dreamtime is currently focused on Baja California...

Here it is. From Mr. Webster.

The crew of Indiscipline II (power boat) "sailed" from Milwaukee to Georgetown in the Exumas (Bahamas) on a year-long cruise. It's all on our web site, including pictures and in my log a detailed write up of things that worked and things that didn't work.

Cruise 2000 is Milwaukee to Florida
Cruise 2001 is Florida to Georgetown and back.
CJ's Log is a detailed write-up to go with the pictures.

I think the trip would be very do-able on the C25 for 2 or 3 people. Be prepared for serious anchoring. The winds do blow there and storm frontal passages (in winter) were frequent. A wing or swing would be ideal because you could get into some very shallow and thus protected anchorages. We met people in very small 20 footers who had sailed over.

Wait unitl the Gulf Stream is calm and winds are southerly. Bimini is a way point and overnight stop over only. The real passage is the 85 miles from there across the banks to Chub Cay, then 45 more to Nassau. Once in Nassau the Exumas are close and offer easy day sails between generally good anchorages. You can stay on the banks side in sheltered waters with usually good winds. Take a marine SSB receiver, it will be your only reliable source of weather info.

Our favorite places were : Chub Cay, Allens Cay, Litter Farmer Cay, and Rat Cay. Georgetown is a most unique place.

Watch your weather, always plan on the next place to hide out while a front passes, and sail on the good days. There's nothing like it.

Thanks all for your insight. This is probably just a pipe dream as Ron mentioned but ya never know.

And Jim, I'm into my second day of reading of your cross country hop. Very impressive and you did it as a family. Fantastic!
Ludington was liberty port for me when I was at the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes. What memories, hard to believe fifty six years have passed.

Today, as I read you're off to the Bahamas. I can't wqait to get to it. Thanks.

My "Dreamtime" fantasy - Launch the boat at Seattle or Anacortes on Memorial Day weekend, then spend an entire summer exploring the Inside Passage all the way north to Sitka, Alaska. The only problem is, how to get the boat home? I think there is a road into Skagway over White Pass, but I don't know if it joins the Alcan. And I am not certain if Skagway has a launch ramp or a travel lift to get a boat back onto the trailer. I've been there once, on a cruise ship, and I don't recall seeing a marina or any other facilities for small boats. I just hope that in 10 more years, when I can retire, that I'll still be in good enough shape health-wise to actually do something like this.

At my age dreaming is where it's at, but just once I'd like to break the mold and follow Nike's addage to,"JUST DO IT". Better change "voodn't hoit" to " shudden hoit".

In any event I'll be pulling for you.
