We have a Cat 25 FK on an inland lake. It has been 4 years since our last bottom job and the slime is thick. We went to our only boat yard on the lake and they want $750 to haul and prep, and @ $250 for paint.
Does this seem high? Any alternatives on Grapevine Lake?
I think that sounds pretty reasonable. On Grand Lake in Northeastern Oklahoma the going price for haul out, prep, drying time storage, paint, and splash is $1,600. Plus $20 per blister for repair.
Mt dealer charges $125/ft for barrier and bottom. On my boat with the paint, epoxy and primer it worked out to $3352.50. Granted that was the whole she-bang but your quote sounds OK to me.
IMHO... sounds pretty typical for that sort of job...
Make sure you are in agreement on what constitutes "bottom prep", how any "extras" will be dealt with (like blisters), how much paint they are buying, what type, and how many coats you're getting.
You might want to see if you can do some of this work yourself. I know that I get much of this work done for a lot less money. I just checked what it cost to haul Walkure from the dock to my house and it came to under $200. Bottom paint costs about $100 a season. You can prep and paint the bottom yourself, and fixing blisters is pretty simple. So if you figure $200 to haul out and $200 to launch, plus $100 for the bottom paint, and you do the labor, you could save yourself some big money, provided you can get someone to haul the boat to somewhere other than a boat yard. Rent a pressure washer to clean off the algae from the bottom when she comes out, and you just saved another bill. None of this work is hard, just messy and time-consuming.
In SW Fla a charge of $25/ft includes, haul, block, pressure wash, paint two coats on bottom, third at water line, and relaunch. This is pretty typical, a few a little less, some a bit more. We are starved for places to do-it -yourself, they have pretty much disappeared. Ron srsk Orion Venice FL
Frank: In Sacramento I paid about $1800.00 for Interlux 2000/2001 epoxy barrier coat, Interlux anti-fouling Micron CSC, included sanding the bottom for paint application, epoxy barrier coat, roller...anti-fouling paint over barrier coat, rolled...approximately 174 sq/ft of surface....Dan #727
When I painted the bopttom of osmepneo, and painted the hull of my daysailor I found there were a number of steps that took an hour or so, and then there was down time, like 6 to 24 hours before the next step. It was a royal pain to dreive to the club, set up and do the step, clean up, and then not be ready to go right on to the next step. This spring I'm planning on paintiong osmepneo, but the marina is only a mile from the lake house, so the delay won't be so bad.
Ron, I'm up in Sarasota...just north of Blackburn brige. Where did you see the price you mentioned. I'm due for a bottom job this spring/early summer. Price sounds good to me. I've been to Bobs boatyard a few times when I had to be hauled for center board work. They seemed a bit pricey. Have not followed up with them yet. Thanks for any info!
That's pretty close to the quotes I got around SF Bay. I found that it could be done about 5 boat units less way up the river and if I do it myself. Think Sparky and Hey Jude will take a week vacation, a little boat ride and get dirty.
Suzie, that was Bob's at $25 a foot, right north of Blackburn pt. It was 25 for sailboats, 35 for powerboats. They did a good job, exactly what they said they would do, on time, at the price quoted. They are trying to recover from previous loathsome, unscrupulous, duplicitous and incompetent reputation, which was well-deserved. Guy I dealt with is named Ethan, sailed his own boat from South Africa to Turkey and also with others sailed Transatlantic. Tell them you are a member of the Venice Sailing Squadron, you will surely get the price. You SHOULD be a member, we meet second Wednesday eves in the Venice Community center, a potluck, usually with a speaker. Any questions give me a call, you can get an application at the Nautical Trader...Ron srsk Orion in Venice FL
Thanks for the info Ron, I'll be do for the bottom job come summer. I hope the place doesn't shut down. Heard they were looking into selling the lot and building high rise condos....would be a shame. I've had my boat dry hauled there twice for my center board. Glad to hear they are on the up and up otherwise. Will keep the Venice Sailing Sqd. in mind, heard you guys have a fun race program..I slip a few down from a Cat. 350 (Seahawk)that races with you folk and sing high praises at the fun times. Best regards!
