OK I am in over my head and need some help. Tonight we had our Dry Dock Party for our club The Black Hills Sailing Association and I volunteered to help with the Race committee. I have raced before just for the fun of it but never new what handicap system they used or really cared. Now its Crunch time both of us on the committee are trying to find the best handicap system to use. We have about 50 members and hope to get about 10 to 15 boats in a race. I was hoping to find a program that I could just type in the type of boat, size and the time that they finished the race and .... It would pop out the winner.... I started looking at the types of handicaps (Amaricap II, PHRF, Portsmouth and IMS ) The more I study the worse my headache is. What is the Phrf of a 1982 sr/sk Catalina 25 anyway?

If you can get away with it, (ie meets the needs of your racers) a reversed start using PHRF is super easy. At the skipper's meeting or as people sail by the committee boat you give them the amount of time they must wait after the gun to start, the slowest boat goes at the gun. That way whoever finishes first wins... period. All of the figuring is done once, when people's boats are registered for the fleet. (This presumes you set a course of the same distance every week.)

Scott,

Thanks for taking on the responsibility. Race Committees are very important, and you obviously want to do it right.

Before selecting a handicap system, I would want to know the type boats that you have in your group. Then pick the handicap system that works for the size range you have. Classic one designs often use Portsmouth, and PHRF is often used when larger boats are involved.

Secondly, if you are unable to find the program you want, a fairly simple spreadsheet will work. You enter, skipper, boat, handicap, finish time and the program works the handicap - kinda like the BCS and the corrected times pop out in the appropriate column. Obviously you have to program the corrected time formula into the computer. But that shouldn't be such a big deal

I know this doesn't fully answer your question, and others might know where you can get a program. But if not, this will work.

Good luck.

Scotd,
Check out http://www.sailwave.com/. You'll find a free program here that will do all your scoring work for you. It handles all the various different handicapping schemes and has a friendly interface. I must also relate that the release that was available last summer had some problems, but I have been assured that the problems have been fixed in the current release. If you decide this is the program you are going to use, run some practice results thru it and verify that the results make sense to you. Also before the race identify your clubs "expert" on each of the handicap systems. If you have software/hardware failures at your regatta, you can go to these people to get help on scoring the race manually. You can also go to the US Sailing site http://www.ussailing.com/to find detailed information about each of the handicap systems including tables of handicaps for most boats.
The most important part of scoring a regatta is getting quality data from the people working the finish line. The sail numbers must be readable. The time must be clear. We use one person calling the sail number another calling the time and three more doing the actual recording onto finish sheets. The lead recorder justifies the three finish sheets after the race and certifies a correct copy as the actual result. Our regatta is a 75 boat mixed PHRF, Portsmouth and multiple One design event using the same start/finish line.
