Boys! Boys! Don't fight, there'll be plenty left--you know West Marine never puts the good stuff out on their store shelves where people might find them and buy them...
Mine arrived Monday along with my copy of Mainsheet. Not usually one to do shameless promotion but for my daughter's sake take a look at page 6.
Right now this is the only thing that keeps me sane while I suffer as the faculty monitor for 6th grade study hall. ahhh there's the bell. Now some fresh coffee and the West Marine Catalogue.

John, nothing shameful to apologize for. The last few paragraphs brought a tear to my eye.
This is my youngest and the most interested in sailing on one of our father/daughter outings. With her 16th birthday in two weeks comes to possibility of a drivers license. I had just spent two hours with her behind the wheel getting to the lake. Usual trip time is 50 minutes. I was sipping a warm beverage and letting calm thoughts fill my mind when I looked out from the galley and shot this picture of her in deep concentration focusing on the wind indicator. Really enjoyed your article and just wish that it had been longer.

You folks with kids to share sailing with are certainly blessed. Good for you
Secondly, the value of the West catalog is that when you find what you want, you know that is the maximum price that anybody will charge for that item. I got mine yesterday, but I think I have already bought about half of what is in there. Or it seems that way.

Ed - you are blessed to have a teenager that will go sailing with you. After our daughter turned 13, it got more and more difficult to take her with us on any outdoor activities like camping or boating - she just wasn't interested in doing anything with us and had such a bad attitude that she could ruin an otherwise nice day. The one time we took her with us on a day trip to Yosemite, she was asleep in the back seat of the car almost the whole day and would only look out the window if we forced her to. Thankfully, she grew out of the "rebellious teenager" phase.
Hey! How do I sign up to get the WM and Defender catalogs!!! <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">I think West Marine sells their catalogs for maybe $10 while they last, along with a $10 rebate coupon, or some such deal. Their supply of catalogs goes real fast, and once the're gone, they're gone for the year. So grab yours while they last. Once you're in their database as a hopeless boat parts junkie, they'll make sure you get your annual catalog in the mail.
Defender Industries offers free catalogs through the mail from their website.
Some other cool catalogs to drool over come from Annapolis Performance Sailing, and Sailrite. But don't forget to give some business to your local mom&pop chandlery so they'll still be there when you need them.
Great article, John Although our two teens have sailed with us since they were very young, first on a Prindle 16, then a Catalina 22, and now on our C25, neither has become addicted to sailing as much as I and my wife have been. My son and I have done some small boat racing in the past in Oceanside harbor and he still will go sailing on the C25 when he is given the opportunity. So he is now in his freshman year at CalPoly San Luis Obispo (engineering, aerospace) and I had given up hope that he would ever really take an interest in the sport....until he came home for this long weekend. Surprise, surprise!! He announced he had been "drafted into skippering one of the FJs on the varsity sailing team because he "was the only one out on Morro Bay last Thursday who was able to tack all afternoon without tipping the boat over". I knew he was watching and learning all along!!! Was I ever happy when he told me this so I gave him an extra big hug and now he wants to go sail our boat tomorrow (Monday) and learn some more. Watch out Jim and Mike!! I've got crew . My valentine will be along to advise him as well....she's always been the best. And now to see where my daughter (senior in high school) stands on sailing......
