I have a 1989 SR/WK, and the PO had rigged the backstay adjuster to the starboard side. But there is also a place to connect on the port side as well. Rather than adjust from one side, I'd like to put a block at the bottom of the backstay, then run a line(or wire cable) from the starboard side, through the block to the adjuster system; which I would then connect on the port side. There is a piece of wire cable with vinyl coating attached now, that the PO said was a safety feature in case the line on the adjuster broke. But I suspect the wire cable is intended for the purpose I have in mind. Should I use the vinyl coated wire cable for this purpose, or just use the same line that's in the adjuster (8mm, ? I think). What does anyone else have rigged for this process?
I have a split backstay sized as shown in the owner's & parts manuals. The lower legs are uncoated 316 alloy 1x19 the same size as the upper backstay (3/16"?), with swaged fork ends. I use a 5-wheel squeezer car with 3/16" control line tackle adjusted from the stbd. side. Some one else mentioned using shock cord to pull the car back up, which strikes me as a clever idea.
