My wife and I would like to take some ASA sailing classes (101,103 & 104)in San Diego in a few months, (we live in Tucson)can anyone make any personal recommendations of sailing schools they have attended or heard about in that area?
While I don't have any experience with the ASA schools in San Diego, I can tell you that you will be happy you took the classes.
We took 101, 103, and 104 in 1999, then took the navigation class (105) in 2000. San Juan Sailing in Bellingham teaches 105 on the water rather than in a classroom where the class runs for a week. Although it is more expensive this way, we sailed a Nordic 44 130nm into Canada and back, dealing with customs, navigating and operating very fine boat. Our ultimate goal was Chatterbox Falls at the head of Princess Louisa, whose entrance is through a narrow rapids that flows close to 8 knots during tide changes. We really got our money's worth in experience dealing with charts, tides and currents not to mention a very wonderful sailing adventure.
Is there a reason you prefer ASA? I took US Sailing classes from a school out of the Berkeley Marina on SF Bay - they'd been in the biz 25 years and seemed to have it together, and I was really impressed with their intstruction. Is either organization's certification considered superior or more useful? Can one start with USS and then take more advanced ASA classes? I'm not advocating USS, it's just what I was exposed to, and I'm wondering if I missed something and should have gone ASA.
As near as I can tell they are both very fine organizations. I wouldn't hesitate to take classes from either one. We went to an ASA school due to their location...we wanted to learn in the San Juan Islands. They both maintain web sites with contact information. In short, I don't think you could go wrong either way.
Never have taken a sailing "lesson" in my life....school of hard knocks and experience....so I can't speak to official schools, but...
Isn't Princess Louisa the most beautiful spot you've ever seen? We took our former boat, a Tartan 30 up the coast and spent several weeks in the Gulf Islands. My daughter hopes to teach sailing this summer at the Young Life Camp at Malibu Rapids this summer. I will never forget how gorgeous it is. I think we counted 17 waterfalls from the dock near Chatterbox Falls. I have heard it called Yosemite North.
Hope you are still considering coming over this summer for the Nationals.....what can I do to encourage you further....or what questions or concerns do you have? I am here to help.....

Don't know any west coast location, but I took the 101 & 103 class the year we bought our 250 and learned a lot. We took our course on Amelia Island, FL as our vacation. Good luck!
Yes, Princess Louisa is probably one of the most amazing places I have ever been. It is really an incredible trip all the way up. We found a place named Smugglers Cove, very sheltered little cove with a narrow little entrance where we over did on oysters (raw and on the BBQ). That will be great for your daughter to teach at Young Life. That is a wonderful location right on the rapids. The only bad thing up there was the helicopter logging they were doing when we were up there. Very Sad!
Marge & I have been talking over the Nationals and we are planning will come if nothing goes wrong between now and then.
