If I remember correctly, Catalina used to put two-hole hinges on the forward hatch, but later put three-hole hinges on for added strength.
Why don't you fill the existing screw holes with a little fiberglass resin and drill new holes to accommodate the three-hole hinges? The old holes will be covered by the hinge, so they won't be visible.
