I am changing out all of my standing rigging except the backstay this week. I have peeled the white vinyl tubing off of the shrouds and there is considerable green powdery stuff in the wire. Is this SS corrosion? Are these shroud covers a bad idea?

Likely it's interaction of some of the copper alloy component in the stainless steel with salt.

I don't believe I've ever seen shrouds with a vinyl coating. Continual 'renewal' of stainless alloy by exposure to oxygen is part of how stainless steel 'works' and stays bright.

IMHO vinyl shroud covers are a bad idea.

More likely its algie (spelling). Old dried crud. The white vynil covers people put on the shrouds tend to promote the groth of this stuff. In addition you should not wrap your turnbarrels with riggers tape. It only promotes corrotion .

My surveyer and my rigger both recommended removing the plastic shroud covers when I bought Passage. The crud that gets in there might be sooty, salty, (certainly in this area) and somewhat acidic. The covers retard drying, and therefore promote whatever bad influence those polutants might have on the wire.

In order for stainless to maintain its non corrosive properties, it must be freely exposed to air. Covering stainless steel will allow it to corrode in places hidden from view and invites failure.
