First time in using the forum but been reading for a year or two. May have to transfer to the Atlanta area so have a question on Lake Lanier if anyone one out there sails the lake. Can you gave me any idea on what the lake is like and can you find a slip on the lake or are there waiting list? Any info would be helpful.
Thanks
JT

Hi JT,

I live in Cartersville, GA and sail on Lake Allatoona. Allatoona is not a good lake for sailing.

Lake Lanier is a very good lake to sail on. It is approx. 43,000 acres and has something like 25,000 boat slips.

The biggest sailing marina is AQUALAND and is slap full of boats ranging from daysailers to big Morgans, Island Packets, Catalinas, Hunters..etc.

Here is the link.

There are several other marinas on the lake as well.

I hope this helps,

Paul is correct about AQUALAND. It would be a great place to enjoy a boat and beautiful shore and sailing scenery. I was there last fall. Wonderful place.

Hi JT

I sail a c25 on Alatoona and have sailed on Lanier. Choice really depends on what you want. If you're a racer or big docside socializer then Lanier wins. It's also quite a bit bigger than Alatoona. It's also one of the busiest lakes in the US.

Alatoona has a different feel to it. It's got lots of shoreline on narrow channels. It's almost all watershed conservation land so the shoreline is, for the most part, undeveloped and pristine. It's really best for finding a cove, camping out enjoying the wildlife, sunsets, starry nights and swimming off the boat.

Proximity to home is important so the choice may be driven by where you end up. Lanier is on the northeast side, up the Hwy 85 corridor and traffic is a little heavy at times. Alatoona is northeast up the 75-575 corridor.

For my money, the best sailing lake is Hartwell - two hours north of Atlanta up the 85 corridor. There's a lot of development moving north along 85 so if you end up north of state route 20, you might want to give Hartwell a look.

I kept my boat on Lanier for three years prior to being transfered to Miami. I docked at Sunrise Cove Marina. Prices were good and the place is quite a bit quieter than aqualand. Sunrise Cove is the furthest north that you can go on Lanier without removing the mast. If you want to check out Sunrise, go to www.westrec.com and see it for yourself. I'm sure aqualand has a page also. Aqualand has haulout facilities and being the only ones on the lake that do, you have to book a good ways in advance.

All in all, lanier is a decent place. I definatley recomend a depth finder as it is a man made lake and has some suprisingly shallow spots in the middle of suprisingly deep areas. Summer weekends are very hectic, to the point that I didn't go out alot on the weekends. But during the winter months, you will have the place to yourself. The wind can be tricky too, as it funnels through the tops of hills. It's a beautiful area and the Amry Corp is heavy with restrictions on the lake as it contains the drinking water for Atlanta, Birmingham etc. So while building is at a frantic pace on the lake, the corps is diligent about keeping the treeline full.

Someone on here recomended Lake Hartwell as well. You should definatley check that out. Had I stayed in ATL, I would have moved my C-25 there. It's a longer drive, but a beautiful place.

Good luck! Atlanta is a great place to live. I didn't grow up there, but consider it home.
Tim
