I have a 1985 C25 with a small deck skylight over the V-birth. Last year the top plastic on the skylight cracked and now leaks. Has anyone replaced one of these skylights or possibly give me suggestions on how to replace it? Can the top plastic piece be removed and replaced? Thanks for your help.
Yup. I did it--got a replacement kit from Catalina Direct (very cheap), but in retrospect, I'd probably get a heavier piece of Lexan for more strength, and bevel the top edges. The plastic lense can be pried out fairly easily, and then the silicone caulk sealing it must be scraped out as completely as possible. The new lense sits on a rim in the plywood core on top of enough caulk to ensure that it seals the edges flush to the deck. CD's kit, incidentally, includes the interior lense, so you can remove that and push the outer lense up from the inside. The whole job is no big deal.
We just replaced ours this winter. We just got a thick piece of 3/8" thick plexiglass with a 1/4" bevel, polished, around the entire rim of the thing at a local plastic and glass place. Then we put it in with some silicone. The new skylight is bombproof now and the replacement glass only cost about $13 and it looks great. We didn't have an interior lense though, so ours may have been a retrofit or something, but that thin plexiglass sure looks like it can deflect too easy and remove the caulk bedding when you step on it, so check out the thicker glass - works great.
Those skylights were really poorly designed. My '22 had them as well as my '25. I replaced the insided piece with a thin piece of plexiglass from Home Depot. I replaced the outside one with a 3/4" piece of black plexiglass. The result, I can step on it all day and never hurt it. I've also dropped the end of the spinnaker pole on it with no damage. The black is also a benefit becuase it keeps the V-birth dark and cooler. I trimmed mine to fit with my table saw. I did not bevel the edges, but it sits down in flush.
