When we were getting my newly aquired '82 C 25 ready for haulout the plug on the mast wiring broke off. Do I have to replace the entire length of cable or can I get away with somehow attaching a new plug?

If your lucky enough to have some slack in the mast wiring you can probably trim the ends and reconnect the plug. A lot depends on if your plug is soldered or screwed. (If it is soldered you are probably screwed.)
Take the plug end apart and see if the wiring comes out easily. If you have to re-attach a soldered plug use plenty of flux to clean the wire ends. Most likely a bit of corrosion is what caused the failure which will make the successful soldering difficult.
The other thing to consider is do you need it? Do you anchor out and need an anchor light? You could hoist a Davis Mega light to serve that purpose. Do you EVER run at night? Are you coastal or inland lake? You might not need to have the lights... if so you could wait until you have a bit of time and drop the mast and re-wire it then.
If you have the mast down now, it is probably worth pulling a new section of wiring. When I did mine I put a length of PVC pipe in the mast with rivets as conduit to keep the wires from slapping in the mast. Others have simply put wire ties every few feet and left the tails on to support the wire. Either approach works.
For a new plug, I added a separate wire for the deck light and upgraded to a 5 pole plug from Aqua-Signal.
