I've enjoyed this forum for two years now and finally became a member last week. Last summer I made a new balanced rudder and installed it I really like the way it handles underway. My only problem is that when I back out of the slip it really handles li

Having an ofset engine with a ballanced rudder can cause the backing problems you are having. There is one solution that several people have done. They have instaled a link between the rudder and engine. Any movement of the rudder causes the engine to mov

On my old boat(a Venture 25) I used to use both the boat's tiller and the outboard tiller at the same time(sitting on the transom using both hands) when manuevering and I could turn it on a dime. I just purchased a Catalina 25 and have not put her in the

On a previous boat, I found that backing into our slip (making a turn toward the port side) was hampered by prop-walk (also called the "paddle-wheel effect"). Backing, the engine will pull you to starboard, and going forward, it'll push the boat
