I would say I splashed this weekend but Moxie came off the trailer with barely a ripple and drifted by herself to the far end of the dock. It was the smoothest launching ever and it was clearly evident that she was as eager to go as I was!

The outboard, on the other hand, decided to test me a bit. When it didn't start by the fourth pull I noticed that the kill button knob had broken off. It uses the little clip to hold it open and with the knob missing the switch was closed, thus preventing the motor from starting. So the two wires of the kill switch came under the business end of my wire cutters and after securing them to the engine housing with some electrical tape it started right up.

I really like the thoughts of that new Tohatsu 9.8 4 stroke outboard, but as long as this 1988 Evinrude 9.9 2 stroke keeps purring along I am keeping my money in my pocket.

From the ramp to the entrance to the marina is about 2 hours on a heading of 240 magnetic, we had mostly cloudy skies with temps in the low 70s and 15 knots of wind, (say it with me...) directly out of the southwest.

The interesting thing to me about the laws of probability is that for some reason the true wind is always directly on my nose just like on the drive home I will get behind someone doing 10 mph under the speed limit and there won't be any opposing traffic for thirty miles until the exact point that I come to a passing lane and then there will be a convoy coming the other way.

Since we were getting short on time to return the rental truck without paying for another full day I sheeted the main in tight and with the motor adding just enough kick we motor-sailed at hull speed right on over. The wind really kicked it up as we went so it was still an exhilarating trip.

Soon enough we were tied up at our new home, the dinghy was stored on the very nice racks and home we went. We turned in the rental with 4 minutes to spare and then off to dinner and a cold frosty beer! What a weekend.

What body of water is Moxie sailing on? I lived in Charlotte, NC for three years back in the late 70's and would have sailed Lake Norman had I had a boat at the time. I have heard that slip fees there have become pretty high - $10/ft if I remember correctly - which is more than almost all San Francisco Bay marinas charge . My dry storage at Folsom Lake had a price increase this year too - $625 to $700 (per year), due to California State Parks doubling their day-use fees because of the State's budget crisis (Folsom Lake is a state park).

Clif,

sounds like a good start to the new season! I'm glad you had an exilerasting sail. When I launch, I have about 300 yds from the marina to my slip at the club. I guess I'll take the boat out in the lake and give the new Nissan 9.8 2 stroke a chance to run off some of the break-in hours.

Unfortunately splash day up north is still a few weeks a way. The last time I looked the lake still had ice on it, but it is getting ready to turn. We have a dock building work party at the club this Saturday. Last year ice destroyed the docks in a matter of seconds. Literally. Wind blew in the remaining ice and the force twisted and turned the docks bending the steel. If it wasn't a terrible sight it would have been an awesomew display of power of moving ice!

Oh well, we are getting to the time to start working on the boat and getting osmepneo ready for the seasopn. That is good!

Hi Larry,

Lake Norman is a mere one hour away but the slip fees are way too high for me to justify in order to sail on an inland lake when the coast is only four hours away. They are currently in the 12 to 15 dollars per foot range.

I am on the Neuse river right at the southern portion of the Pamilco sound. Last year I slipped in Oriental, NC but this year I have moved across the river to Havelock, NC very near the Cherry Point Marine Corps air base. Specifically Moxie is slipped in Matthews Point Marina, slip 31, on Club Foot Creek.

It is an easy trip south to Beaufort, NC or east to Ocracoke. It is eighty miles long and varies from eight to 30 miles wide. The barrier islands of the Outer Banks separate it from Atlantic Ocean so there is lots of protected water sailing or you can go off-shore. All this for only 4 dollars a foot!
