Has anyone installed the translucent deck hatch from CD? The v-birth is so dark, and I think the whole interior would be brighter with the new deck hatch. The problem is the $450.00 price. For that kind of money I hope the change would be dramatic. Any comments? Fred
I am tossing around the same idea. I looked at one at CD in there warehouse. But I still havn't jumped. I think it would look great on the boat from the outside. I have been trying to find one installed to look at. Good luck,
I installed that hatch a couple of years ago. Even though the $$$ are hard to justify, it makes a big difference on the interior. From the exterior my 85’ looks a lot newer. If you do go for it – be careful on the installation, and ensure that your holes for the hatch dogs and adjusters are lined up accurately before drilling. Just don’t tell the wife what it really costs.
Maybe this will give you an idea of how to use the old ports from the head. I replaced both with nice Lemar opening ports. This is the non-opening one. Pretty straight forward installation and after 4 years no leaks. It certainly does make the v berth brighter and more inviting.
I installed the CD hatch two years ago. It makes a big difference in the light in the forward compartment. The price was a bit high but discussing the hatch with the guy who makes them for CD he'll pretty much back up the hatch for as long as you have the boat. It is over a half inch thick smoked lexan and it looks very cool. no one will be able to tell you have a low number 77, or what ever. You will need to put in a good hatch gasket, and some good hatch dogs. I found some really nice ones through west marine.
My 89 came with a translucent hatch. I really like it. It's made by bomar. It wouldn't work on the older 25's, so the retrofit is the way to go. The interior of the bathroom and sink compartments on the 89 are white (one side of the plywood is teak, one side a formica like substance) so the increased light really shows up. Don't the older 25's have a teak interior in those compartments? (two sided teak plywood) if so I think the extra light would be even more important.
