My 16-year love affair with my Catalina 25 is over!
I just bought a used 36 Catalina tall rig and I can now say good by to “Chortle” and this fine forum!!
Chortle is for sale.
She is a 1980 swing keel, fresh water boat that has spent her life Cruising in the Canadian North Channel and Northern Lake Huron waters.
Features...
Keel Cable replaced in 2003 “Top Dog” EZ Loader dual axel trailer with steel belted tires in excellent condition. The trailer was repainted in 2003. Comes with a 9.9hp Volvo Sail Master 2 cycle motor that runs like a sewing machine! I have a 2000 9.9 hp 4 cycle Honda with electric start and 10 amp alternator, motor is to be sold separately. Naugahyde pop top weather cover, in great shape. Flexable Furler by Cruising Design, Roller Furling Jib and Main fully battened sail by North Sails, in excellent condition. Depth Sounder/fish finder. Expanded waste holding tank (15 gal) replaced all hoses and toilet. Set up for cruising. Only used 2 weeks a year since 1988! Stored indoors last 5 years. Lots of love and attention as well as a few special modifications.
We'll miss you. Good luck with your 36. I too am dreaming of owning a 36. I get the c36 list from Sailnet and watch the posts to learn all I can about them. I check the C36 association website too. (Our site is better)
Thanks for asking and you are quite correct, the Catalina 36 web site is good but is just a shadow of the rich participation of this 25/250 site. The participation of the many 25/250 owners is really astounding! I have spent many cold winter evenings reading the posts on the forum. I will miss that most of all.
My new boat is a 1993 tall rig with a wing keel. She is in wonderful shape, fully loaded with every comfort you would expect from a full sized yacht. She has 417 hours on the diesel engine, just a fraction of what a well cared for diesel should be expected to deliver before a major overhaul.
The previous owner has lovingly cared for the boat and after years of casual looking and months of intensive searching, I believe that this boat is one of just a few in this shape, in fresh water with all of the features I was looking for.
I am having the old name “Destiny” removed and her new name is “Spirit of Aloha”.
She is currently in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. The first week of May, my crew of 4 friends will help me sail her the 330 miles north up Lake Michigan to the Straits of Mackinaw and south into Lake Huron to Cheboygan Michigan, where my slip is located. It should be a grand adventure! It is many time farther that I have ever sailed before. We expect to go day and night for about 55 hours to get her home.
The decision to move up to a 36 is just a question of family, safety and comfort. When my children were small, the 25 was our summer vacation adventure boat. Both of my children spent many summer vacations swimming, hiking and boating in the water of the North Channel. The both remember picking wild blueberries and bringing them back to the boat in a hat, for blueberry pancakes
Now my children are married and Sandi and I are going to be grandparents, we want a boat that can take the extended family back to the beautiful cruising grounds of the North Channel.
The slip in Cheboygan Michigan places the Benjamin Islands about 110 miles away. A simple 2 day sail from our home slip. That’s the reason for the tall rig and the wing keel, to get to the North Channel and to slip into the shallow water anchorages.
This decision to move up to a 36 is all about family and friends. Chortle, my 25 footer has a new job with a new young family. She will give them much happiness.
