While the mast is down what can be used to clean the Aluminum. Someone told me not to be too aggressive because it will remove the oxide coating. After cleaning the mast, should it be polished and with what product. Some metal Polishes say not for anodized Aluminum. Is the mast Anodized Aluminum. Your suggestions will be appreciated.
Our masts are typically anodized aluminum. (haven't seen one that isn't)
IMHO, There's not really a lot you can (or really should) do to polish them up. I'd just give it a scrubdown with a bristle brush and some mild detergent. Be aware that some 'stong' household cleaning compounds can attack aluminum... stay away from them.
I'll second that "don't do much" cleaning to the aluminum spars because the aluminum is open to corrosion once you remove the anodizing. The detergent and brush is a good recommendation, but don't use scrubby pads or abrasive cleaners so as not to damage the surface.
I wiped mine down with a mild cleaner (a couple of dashes of Joy dish soap in hot water) just to remove any salt residue and dirt. I gave it a light coat of boat wax to give it some protection from the elements.
The mast has a protective coating on which you should only use soft sponge and mild detergent. Regular car wax provides good protection after cleaning.
However, if your mast is old and already corroded with those white bumps, like mine, I used a greeny with SoftScrub, then car wax. That worked pretty well.
I don't believe that the masts on our C 25s are anodized. Anodized masts are usually differently colored (gold or black anodized)than bare aluminum, which I think ours are. The protection on bare aluminum masts comes from an extremely thin self forming oxide coating that will repair itself if it becomes worn. I clean my mast with boat soap.
