I'm going to have to use my Honda 5 horse until I figure out which new engine I'm going to buy. I'm trying to do a tune up, but I can't find the owner's manual. It is a '93 BADL model.
-What is the correct sparkplug gap? -What weight oil & lower unit lube should I use? Synthetic a good idea? -What grade of gas should I use? While shopping for a new engine, I saw that one maker recommends using mid-grade. -Any trick to installing a new impeller? -I would like to install a new fuel line, but no one in the area sells replacement connecters for Honda engines. West Marine sells one for Johnson outboards that looks mighty close. Anyone know if it will work?
I don't want to make anyone mad, because I know from previous threads that most of you are rabid Honda lovers (imagine a smiley face here, I just don't know how to actually add one). But I'm disappointed with the lack of support available for hapless Honda owners in my part of Texas. No one in the San Antonio/Austin area sells or services them. I called the Honda customer support line and was told that the only place to get parts is from some equipment supply company in California. Impellers and gaskets are in the mail, but I forgot to order the fuel line connector.

spark plug gap should be 028 (check the manual) but that is right for my 8
SAE90 gear oil I always used regular unleaded. Outboards are very low compression. Don't know about the impeller. It should be easy. It's made to be changed. Use anti-seize on all bolts when putting them back. The WM Johnson connector WILL NOT WORK at least on my 8 HP (I have one, want to buy it?)
I have the bolts out of the lower unit, and have gotten it to drop down about 2-3 inches, but can't get the unit to separate completely. What is the trick-- brute force? I can see the pump and can access the bolts holding it together, but I can't remove/replace gaskets without completely yanking it apart. Does the drive shaft slip loose from the bottom end or the top? Do I need to remove the prop and tailpiece to access something?

I think you'll find that where the vertical shift rod meets the pivoting shaft inside the cowl in front of, and slightly below, the crankcase, there's a clevise pin that has to be removed before the lower unit will completely separate from the power head. (I'm guessing, since I haven't looked under the cowl of a 5HP Honda in years.) You are following along in the factory service manual, right? Brute force is seldom a satisfactory substitute for reading the directions.
