My 25 year old main has some serious rust stains on it Doug C has recommended soaking it in Woolite. I'm willing to try it, but I need to know the "recipe" and how long to soak it.
Feel free to pile on with any other suggestions.

The sails on our new 1979 boat had some serious rust stains. We took it to one of our local sail lofts, and they tried something that they used for special stains. Slight difference.

So, I went to the grocery store, or Walmart. I bought a couple or three rust removers. Average off the shelf stuff. Wink, for fabric, and others that weren't really for fabric. I soaked the sails with a combination of these products. I did this in the bath tub. Great results. Didn't seem to harm the sails at all.

Be careful about mixing different cleaning agents. They can react with each other and produce poisonous gasses. I gassed myself out of my house once.

From a SaiNet article titled Sail Care and Cleaning...

<i>"...Rust can be removed with a thin paste of baking soda or toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Wash the area well with mild detergent and rinse thoroughly. This will not remove any stain embedded in the coating, but it will remove most of the surface stain. Remember, that using any abrasive on a sail reduces its life. For removing small areas of rust stain, a mild gel product named Magica is recommended..."</i>

Just a by the way, I used OxiClean last week. It only softened the rust but did a great job of getting rid of the <u>mildew</u> and did make the whites and colors on the sails brighter. I used 4 cups in 40 gallon plastic trash can. I think it was to much and one should be able to get same results with out so much detergent. I'm hopeing since it dosn't contain bleach its ok for the sails. They are 24 years old but look nice and white now except for the rust stains.
