Selling the boat is supposed to be the second happiest day of one's life but as I steered us to the dock on Saturday and the new owner's family jumped off with the spring lines it was hard not to get all choky. I can't imagine having had a better pair of learning tools for a novice sailor than a Catalina 25 and this forum.

I'm sure I'll visit this forum for a while to come. Thanks to all of you for your considerations and camaraderie!

Rich--what did I miss here? Where are you headed from here? Wherever/whatever, stay in touch and take us with you! One of these days Passage might live back in Mystic or Noank, where I bought her. What should I be watching for?

Onward and/or upward!

Dave

Thanks for the kind words Dave, at least I didn't get swatted with any "good riddances" on the way out!

I'll be transitting my "new" 1987 Cal 28 "Kiltie" from Portsmouth, Rhode Island to Pine Island Marina (there must be 50 marinas in the US with this name?!?) in Groton some time in June or July [http://www.pineislandmarina.com]. I suppose that will be her home base unless Pine Island gets any shallower and her keel is resting on mud (I think half the moorings there can be reached by wading...)

Very nice! Is yours the "new" version (traditional cabin trunk) they started building around 1987, or the flat-top they built until about then? (I won't way which I like better until you answer, except to say I'm a little partial toward Raymond Hunt designs...)

Dave, She's the "new" Ray Hunt version, which actually ran from 1985-89:

http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_detail.jsp?currency=USD&units=Feet&checked_boats=1129802&slim=quick&

I was really impressed with how closely she conformed to all of the features Practical Sailor indicated in its buying guides: smaller cockpit with protected companionway sill, beefy deck hardware, integral chocks, double bow rollers, isolated gas/propane lockers, engine access on 4 sides, etc., etc. She seemed like she was built by the book, the price was right, and before you know it you own another boat...

But er, ahem, this is a Catalina forum, so I'll mention that the new owners are a Connecticut family who have been squeezing themselves into a Catalina 22 for 5 years and will probably show up on this forum soon with #4603, well maintained by her p.o. (that would be me! )

We'll let the new owners of #4603 be the judge of that!

Congratulations, Rich,

I'm a HUGE fan of Cals and Ericsons, so I'm envious of you, brother. What a great layout your Cal has! You made a fine choice.

I'm sure you'll keep hangin' out on this forum, too. I'm sailing a Hunter 25 now, but I can't imagine not checking in here regularly to see what's going on. I used to haunt the Trailer Sailor forum, but I haven't logged on there in months. I have more fun and learn more here.

Thanks Randall, I loved the C25 for its layout too compared with similar boats, but I need a year to lose the dent in the top of my head from the pop-top hatch dog...

Another boat that seemed like a lot of value for what the market is asking is the O'Day 28. I'll bet someone could easily figure out how to make a C25 head area into that kind of shower enclosure with the drain in the passage floor...

Dave,
Havent you been paying attention? Randall has mentioned Hunter a number of times in the past. No one has ever made a comment before that I can remember. It's just that he seems like such a cool guy that he can get away with it.
I myself actually got into a Mac 26 the other day. I had an owner of one race with me last week, he said he liked the deck layout of my boat better than his. The other friend just got his Mac a couple of weeks ago. I am kind of nervious to say the admrial liked the wheel steering, but she still likes our Cat better.
This is a freindly forum lets keep it that way, if someone from the dark side wants to join us, just be nice and let them see what a real sail boat is like.

Sheesh! I guess I'll just go back to painting my bottom and keep quiet! BTW, Matt, YOU haven't been paying attention--Randall used to own a C-25. I think questions regarding his judgement are entirely appropriate!
