What would you recommend for cleaning and protecting the (plastic, vinyl?), covering on the lifelines? Mine have developed a dark sticky residue I assume is from exposure.

I thought I read awhile back on this Forum that using Acetone would work. It gave a caution that the lifelines would be a bit sticky for a couple of minutes, but that would go away. I actually tried it on a short section of my lifelines last week and it worked wonderfully. It did make it sticky until it dried, but it cleaned it up nicely. They don't look brand new, but a lot, lot nicer. I'm hoping the acetone won't hurt the lifelines any, and I doubt they would. It did take awhile to do even a short section, so it's not going to be a quick job as there is a lot of lifeline. But, I'll do it over a couple week period and eventually it will look great.

I would hesitate to use acetone because it works by degrading the chemical bonds on the surface of the vinyl (I think PVC-based?). While I've never used this product, Practical Sailor named Knight's Multi-Purpose Cleaner their "hands down champ" in its recent vinyl cleaner test (using different products side-by-side on old, grungy fenders), in terms of effectiveness and ease of use. At about $7 a bottle, I think I may give it a try.

Acetone works just fine. Yep its tacky for a few minutes. No it doesn't hurt the life lines or degrade them. Put some on a clean white rag and wipe them down. It also works on fenders.
