Frank, I used white Marine-Tex on mine. I spread it on with a broad putty knife, let it cure and sanded it out. There were two downsides for me;1) the Marine-Tex really gets hard and does not sand real easy, and 2) it is really expensive - took $50+ just to do some fairing and smoothing. I then put 3 coats of epoxy over the whole keel.
I've had good results with Marine Tex too. Unless you get it very smooth when you apply it, it takes forever to sand it smooth. I use a 4 1/2" grinder to get it close to smooth, and then finish it off with an random orbit disc sander. The grinder makes fast work of it.
How much area do you have to fair? Marine Tex is geared for small repairs and is (IMHO) pretty expensive. An alternative is West System epoxy with 'glass bead' filler added.
Still not what you'd call cheap, but less than Marine Tex if you have a project bigger than a spot repair. Kinda fun to work with.
