We have a L-Dinette style cabin. The table is very large and heavy. We only use it to make up the bed for queen size bed. For everyday use, would like to put another table onto mounting that would look nice and still have the open air feeling. Anybody have any ideas or pictures.
I use mine to hold charts under plexiglass clipped to the table. But, I have toyed with the idea of moving it up against the forward bulkhead at an angle and sticking some sort of stool in the pedestal thingy for a seat. Just an idea.
The table for the traditional layout is also heavy and clunky. It is, frankly, one of the things Catalina saved money on--flakeboard (or Aspenite, or whatever you want to call it) with formica surfaces. Heavy and ugly.
Check the Tech Tips section--I am sure I have seen something in there. Here are two suggestions:
1) Simple: Cut the table top out of half-inch Baltic fir plywood (it has five or six plys, is very stable, and takes stain well--I have used it for drawer sides in my kitched cabinets). Rabbet half-inch teak (1/2" x 1") and slide and glue that onto the table top as an edge lip. Teak stain on the fir, high gloss varethane (better than poly because it doesn't yellow) and presto. A piano hinge down the middle will allow it to fold against itself. Problem: it won't work as a filler for the qween berth.
2) Do essentially the same as above, but instead of using Baltic fir, build up the table top of strips of 1/2" holly and teak, and glue and biscuit join the strips together to form the table top. More work, but worth the effort.
