Folks, I had some difficulty drilling a pilot hole in my mast his weekend while attempting to mount the padeye for my new whisker pole. The drill bit seemed to hit some resistance after penetrating the outer surface. I backed out right away as I did not want to damage what I can only guess is the electric lines running to my deck and anchor lights. Has anyone else run into this? Anybody have a suggestion? I have searched the archives here and everything has to do with pole selection and the track/padeye debate, and padeye height. I can find nothing on actual installation. Willy
The conduit for the electrical is riveted to the front of mast but slightly off center to the starboard. The two center holes should be ok as well as the port, but the starboard hole may need to be carefull drilled as the conduit is behind it.
I'll add my question now. I've read comments about not mounting the ring for the pole on a sliding mount, but I havent heard mcuh about sizing. Forspar recommends a 6-12 Heavy Duty for a jib and a 7-17 adjustable for a genoa. I'm looking at a drifter in the not too distant future and was wondering which pole I should get. Will the 7 - 17 keep me from using it on my jib, and if I do use the pole for the Jib and a drifter would I want an adjustable ring to get the best sail shape?
Greg: I just got a new 7-17 which is quite adjustable. It would work fine on your jib....or a big drifter. It is somewhat heavier than the much smaller 6-12, but you'd be much happier with it, IMHO. Sailnet had a sale on them some time ago; don't know what they are now, but not cheap! Over twice the cost of the 6-12.

At one point you were going to sail down for the Nationals. I think we talked you out of that, but have you found a trailer to borrow or rent? We'd love to have you. Pretty short of 250s. Good party....and a great place to try out the new whisker pole!
Thanks for the info, I was leaning towards the 7-17. I know it's heavier, and larger and twice the price but it looks like I would be a better buy since I don't know what all my sailing future will hold. I did find Blue Water Sailing Supply www.bluewaterss.com who has been pretty cheap for everthing I've been doing.
As for the Nationals I had a trailer lined up and some work to do in Portland that week, but I had to change my plans and go to see my family in Texas that week.
