My first unfurling this season of my jib revealed green something-or-other had grown on it. Anyone have a good suggestion for cleaning this without having to de-mast the boat to clean the sail?
Try one of the cleaners that screws onto a hose that you can get at a hardware store. Ask a clerk for help. Don't try HomeDepo or Lowes or WalMart they don't have sales clerks that can help.
we found the same thing. the majority of it was in the first few rolls of the sail and within reach.. i used TILEX bathroom cleaner. just spray it on and wipe with paper towels. in a few minutes it will be gone. remember that this is similar to bleach. you dont want it to get on anything else. make sure to rinse it with plenty of clean water right away and let it dry.
River, That harley ever happens to a boat sailed regularly. I'd avoid the bleach solutions and opt instead for several long sails in sunlight. It's the best bleach available and free.
I just removed my jib off the CDI furler hoping to breath some new life into it with some repairs. It is very easy to take off. The only problem to solve was I had to tie another line onto the internal halyard so it wouldn't run away to the peak. So you can remove it and soak it in a gentle solution of cleaner in a kids pool, which is what I understand most others do to clean their sails. Be sure to thoroughly rinse.
