Hello. I am here in Roseville, CA. I am shopping for a 1989 Catalina 25, wing keel, with a marine head. I have been looking and actually found one but the owner decided to keep it. So I am back out here looking again. If anyone knows of one, please reply.

Welcome, Kathy! You've been doing your homework--you're looking for what is arguably the best 25-footer Catalina has ever built, and one of the nicest 25' cruisers anybody has ever built. But Catalina was slowing down then, trying to survive (while many others were failing). So, that boat is in short supply and relatively high demand. If they built that same boat today, they would probably have to price it in the 40s.

Are you looking for a WK for skinny water or for trailering? If neither, don't forget to look at C-25 fin keels, which draw just a little over a foot more (but definitely are less ramp-launchable). Have you checked out Jim Meadows's listing on our Swap Meet? Arizona may be close enough to check it out.

All the best, and we hope you join our little (big) club!

Dave, Just wanted to thank you for your kind words and acknowledging that I have indeed done my homework. I have contacted Jim Meadows regarding his boat and am waiting for a response. I know I still have a lot to learn, but hopefully making the right choice for the right boat will be a good start. Again, thank you.

Kathy,

That's another hidden benefit of sailing - you'll always be learning new things. I think you've made an excellent choice . . . the vast majority here who move up to larger boats aquire Catalinas. You've done a good job on your homework. Just curious, how did you come across the Catalina 25 - what attracted you?

Kathy, you've made an excellent choice. I sail this very boat you are looking for but I am not selling it, just sailing it. To me it is a very stable boat and the shallow draft is excellent in our shallow back bays around San Diego. Just last Friday night I awoke from an overnight raft up with Jim Baumgart (also of Fleet 7) to an extremely low tide in about 8 feet of water and although Jim sails a fin and decided to worry about it, I had no worries even if there was only 4 feet of water. I spent 3 days on the boat and can't wait until the next time I can do the same. It sure is comfortable and stable and it just looks good in the water and sails real solidly.
Some say the tall rig is too tender but I find that not to be a problem because I reef early and usually like to sail the 110 jib instead of the 150 because it tacks easily. In really light wind days I will use the genoa but I get plenty of speed with the main all the way up and the 110 and find that by the afternoon around San Diego the winds get up to 12 to 15 knots regularly so by then the 110 is preferred anyway.
Hope the Arizona boat works out because it sounded like you would not have to do much outfitting at all.
Good luck and happy sailing. BTW, you'd probably sail Folsom Lake right? (We've been by there a few times in the past)

Steve,

After looking at many many different models and makes, I settled on the Catalina 25 because of safety factors. I went with the 1989 because of its improvements over earlier models and because of the wing keel.

Gary and Susie,

Actually, Folsom Lake is practically in my back yard and we have checked out all the ramps. Had the opportunity to also "test sail" a boat there but the seller decided to keep her.

We are also looking forward to Lake Tahoe (about 2 hours away) and the California Delta (about 30 minutes away). Lots and lots of quiet secluded lagoons in the Delta or for a more exciting day -- we can head out into the Bay.

We are very excited.

Thanks so much for all the advice and encouragement.
