I have no fear about asking a seamingly obvious question.
What is pointing or the ability to point.
What is the exact definition, as it would greatly help understanding some of the posts. I probably already know what it is, but just have not put a word to a characteristic or feeling of the boat that I have already experienced.
pointing sailing at an angle close to the direction of the wind
point to turn closer to the direction of the wind (point up); eleven and one-quarter degrees of arc; one of the 32 divisions of the compass card
point high to sail very close to the wind
Pointing is the ability of the boatto make progress into the wind. It is a balance between speed through the water, the angle made good, and leeway. You can have good performance to windward by sailing at a small angle to the true wind, but not so small an angle that your boat speed falls off a lot. As your speed falls leeway or side slip stays constant or increases and progress is reduced. As the waves get larger going to windward requires more power and you have to sail at a wider angle to continue to advance. Last part is that if the wind gets high enough and the waves large enough you cannot make progress to windward. This is because in large waves and high winds the entire surface of the water is moving downwind and carries you with it.
