FBI warns of possible deadly floating material
From Kathleen Koch
CNN Washington Bureau
Monday, June 28, 2004 Posted: 6:49 AM EDT (1049 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The FBI issued a warning last week for state and local authorities to be on the lookout for booby-trapped floating material in and around the nation's marinas, warning they could contain explosives.

A homeland security official told CNN on Sunday there is "no intelligence terrorists are planning to or want to do this."

The official said the warning was sent in a weekly bulletin to 18,000 state and local agencies, a lightly classified alert that outlines possible tactics terrorists could use.

The bulletin says plastic-foam containers, inner tubes and even buoys could be rigged to blow up on contact.

Currently, the national terrorism alert level is "yellow," or "elevated."

On May 28, the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department issued a joint statement citing "credible intelligence" of a threat to the nation.

"Credible intelligence from multiple sources indicates that al Qaeda plans to attempt an attack on the United States during" the period leading up to the November elections, according to the statement by Attorney General John Ashcroft and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge.

Yeah. Right. Osama bin Laden really hates little sailboats. Al Quaida would make a shuddering world wide statement if a Catalina 25 blew up.

Why do I feel as though Mel Brooks and Monty Python have taken over?

Second sentence in article:

"... there is no intelligence terrorists are planning to or want to do this."

The context of the original FBI document was a list of "nasty things that somebody could do".

IMHO: Splashy CNN New blurb is mostly beating the 'ol fear drum... or perhaps it was a really slow news day.

Actually, I think you could shorten the quote even further: "There is no intelligence."

I always wonder why they publish new ideas for the terrorists to consider.

I dunno... I've seen a lot of <i>buoy traps</i> on the Chesapeake! The crabbers are really crowding some of the channels with their crab pots.

I call it "the stupidizing" of America.

Laci Peterson, OJ, Kobe, Cartoon network, Enquirer. Did you see the issue..on the news stand (I don't buy those things),with the 2 alien (homosexual), skeletons who died in a loving embrace.

I think I'm gonna lose my mind. Are people really that stupid. Who buys into all this crap?

I sure do miss the "old days". Remember, the Huntley Brinkley report, only 3 channels plus UHF. We played sports not violent video games.

Here is an eerie omen. We were all so excited when Dad bought a color TV. Little did we know that the monster had been unleashed. We didn't watch much TV when it was B&W.

Okay, I'll quit venting.

Thanks,

PW

The summer of 1968 I was living for a week with a Swedish family in Sodertalje. Bjorn Borg was a kid hitting tennis balls at the local court. The father of the family, Mr. Hultin, spoke little English, and I spoke no Swedish. One night he and I were up late watching TV. He looked at me and said, "You like dis?" I replied, "No." He got up, walked over to the TV, pointed to the set and said, "I show you de best ting about dis." He punched the off button and pointed to it: "Ees de best ting."

Why people put TVs on their boats is beyond me -- and Catalina now offers swinging brackets on the otherwise brilliant 310. I sail to get AWAY from that! (Yes, I know about VHS and DVD. If I wanted to watch a movie, I wouldn't do it on a boat!)

Yes, amazingly enough, there are people who buy into all this crap. Otherwise that crap wouldn't be so profitable.

"...you had to get up and walk over to the set to change channels!" And it was 10 miles each way, barefoot in the snow, and it was uphill both directions! And we LIKED it! And all the kids weren't fat and unhealthy either, 'cause they played outside more.

Yeah that's right......the stupid glare from a TV in a marina at night coming out of a floating condo stink pot...

Face it, for most people life is a spectator sport.

We sort turned the TV off about two years ago. No cable. No antenna. Only movies we rent.
Sorry to say we missed most of the important things in American life for a while: The Bachelor, Survivor, The Wedding, and anything with Jessica Simpson or on of the Jacksons....

But, we do manage to get a sail, bike ride, or walk in most nights

I keep thinking about George Orwell's 1984.
The govt. harps on and on about the enemy. And one day the treaty is signed and the next day the enemy is someone else.
Having a common enemy allows the govt. more power. Giving the govt more power takes away our freedoms (just ask Jose Padilla).
Let's sail our boats away.
But to where???? I used to think Australia, but they are losing freedoms down there too.
Sure terrorism needs to be reduced.
But when do we realize that big goverment is too big?
While I'm at it ... (and this REALLY has nothing to do with sailing)
Has anyone ever heard of the Fair Tax bill in congress?!!!
It would really be fair AND it would get rid of the IRS (Yea!!)

Ok, now back to our regular programming.

I actually saw a yellow bait box floating around our marina! And... I didn't call the homeland security department for fear that they would seal off the lake for an investigation.

Sometimes these guys kind of overreact. I really feel sorry for that artist who was growing yeast for his art work, and for the baker who gave him the yeast. He may get 20 years for illegal use of yeast in his art.

I sometimes think the Onion was right, and that the Supreme Court should deliver an opinion that the people of the United States are unfit to govern ourselves. http://www.theonion.com/news/index.php?issue=4026&n=1
