This is a topic that was printed many years ago but it is worth repeating as I followed the directions and it really helped. I need to do it again:
The sail goes up hard because of the friction between the sail slugs and the mast. By lowering the sail out of the track except for the top slug, put in a candle just large enough to fit into the slot and then load in the lower slugs and raise the sail. Leave the candle in. Each time the sail is raised, the mast will be lubricated.
I've used liquid dishwashing soap. Dribble a 1/2 tablespoon of soap over the top slug before hoisting. The soap dribbles down over the other slugs and lubes the slot when the sail goes up.
Answer to the question about the sun. The answer is no, that is if you use cheap candles. The cheap one don't melt well. I'd stay away from beeswax candles. Sorry about the lateness of the return to the message but I was invited out on a larger sail boat to watch the fire works. We had a front row seat, right behind the CG who patrolled to keep boater back from the blasting barge. Just had to brag a little.
