Hi there, Every so often is see in a discussion,or article, a reference to polars? What are they. How do they affect me? Why should I care? Are they affected by sail selection? wind? boat? beer? wind direction? beer? stock market?
I'll bet the racers out there know the answer to this one.
Polars refer generally to a diagram that describes a boat's best performance on different points of sail. Usually the North position of this circular chart represents dead on (the irons) and curving lines around the chart show relative speed at the various points of sail (the farther the line is from center, the better the potential spped).
Yes, and you would have one polar for every wind speed, and every sail combination, and of course variations of load, rigging adjustments, and so on.
Generally the polar diagram has a variety of wind speeds plotted on the same chart in different colors. Also you only need the chart from 0 to 180 degrees (your boat is symmetrical) so sometime they plot the polar for wind speed 0-5 on the right and then 5 - 10 on the left, etc.
Which begs the next question, does anyone out there have "polars" on their C-25? I would be interested to see such a chart, even though there will be differences in all our boats because of model, rigging and sail inventories. Thank you. Todd Frye
Here are a set of polars for a Pearson 10 meter for visual reference, note: I am not implying any similarities. I've never seen them for a Catalina 25, but the boat is so prevalent (at least it used to be) that I am sure a set exists. US Sailing used to (and probably still does) keep a polars library of sorts. Print outs (which usually weren't much better than the .gif files below were available for a rather steep price. In most cases, everyone in a fleet would chip in and then copy the heck of of the thing - then pass it along to sailors at other regattas (after the race).
If anyone has a set of Polars for the 25, I would love to get a copy.....
One other thing....make sure the polars are exactly for you boat, or at a minimum the exact set up for your boat. Same rig, keel, outboard config (most likely the polars will be without any motor attached), weight, Sail sizes (including spinaker), possible spin pole size etc.
