I was checking the idle speed on the above on the weekend and noticed something which struck me as odd.
On the rear of the leg about 6" down from the bottom of the cowling there are two holes which emit exhaust when running. When I plugged thses holes the exhaust then came out under the water as it immediately started bubbling up.
Is this normal? I would have thought that the exhaust would have always been directed under the water.
Clam Beach is exactly right. Those little holes are also placed where they are to release exhaust above the waterline when you have the motor in reverse, so the prop doesn't cavitate in it's own exhaust bubbles. Yamaha solves the cavitation in reverse problem by having a forward-facing exhaust port annulus built in to the propeller itself.
