Donna: In fresh water, the swinger is less vulnerable, but it should still be checked.

Larry: Back in the "old days", brackets were not being engineered for high-thrust, extra-long, 100+lb. four-strokes, but now they are. Look at a Garelick 71091 or 71090 compared to a Garhauer or most others, and you'll see the difference. The Garelicks (and my similar Fulton) are built like bridges, using big, heavy cast U-beams instead of the little welded tubes on the Garhauer. The heavier springs are just an indication of a design meant for heavier, more powerful loads. If you have that type of engine, the extra $75 or more for the correct mounting is, IMHO, a nit. People who want to save that money should also get a lightweight, low-thrust 2-stroke and save some money on it, too. These are long-term investments--no point getting it wrong.

I have pretty much decided to get the Garelick 71091, since it works well and fits properly on Frank Hopper's boat. I had a 71090 on my old boat, #1205, and ran into a problem with the arms not being long enough to allow the motor to tilt (engine cover hitting transom). I had to pull the mount off and re-install it with a 3" thick polyethylene shim block under it. Frank says the 71091 has plenty long enough arms to tilt the motor on his boat.

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">$180...The Garhauer OB-125 shown on their website looks like the old 2-spring model, not the newer 4-spring unit that Catalina Direct is selling. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

That's correct...sort of.

Garhauer sells the two-spring OB125 for $170.50. Catalina Direct sells the same mount for $237 under Part#D1108 (my roughly 4 year old handbook says it was $209). They say the springs are roughly in equilibrium with motor weight of about 85 lbs, although it's rated up to 120 lbs. As such, many have been sold to folks with 100 lb.+ motors and they are quite satisfied with it. However, some don't have the strength or lifting technique to be satisfied with its operation with heavier motors.

So...Catalina Direct also now sells a 4-spring mount (under Part#Z2275) for $289. This was essentially designed by Catalina Direct (but is made by Garhauer) and thus Garhauer cannot sell it direct to the public. Apparently, it has other design changes from the OB125 other than having two additional springs. They also said they sell a three-spring version, but I didn't get the part# or price.

I think it's great that there are now more good options people can choose from based on their individual desires, abilities and motor weight.
