We were sailing for the past couple of days in Grand Traverse Bay and periodically our Depth Sounder would stop showing numbers and only "MSD" vertically on the left side. It is, I believe, the original Datamarine depth sounder on our 1985 C25 as it matches the knotmeter next to it. Our theory is that whenever it got over 200 feet the depth sounder wouldn't work. Is that possible? We were in water over 200 in the middle. Whenever we got closer to anchor or to the shore the numbers came back. However, when the numbers weren't showing it would periodically show strange numbers like 2.1 or 3.9, etc - or it would show a number and freeze for a minute or so. Was it just confused? Anyone else have the original depth sounder and have this issue?

A lot of depth sounders have 200' limits... especially the older ones.
Sounds like pretty typical behavior.

I believe that "MSD" means "Maximum Sustained Depth".

False shallow readings can be due to schools of fish, some stuff floating under your boat or air bubbles and /or turbulance under the surface caused by the wakes of other boats. One way to reduce these false readings is to turn down the sensitivity of your unit. I agree that the MSD readings indicated water deeper than the capabilities of your sounder.

On my standard horizon, two horizontal bars appear when I exceed the maximum depth and I get false shallow readings when caught in wakes or pass over fish swimming near the surface. I don't think there's anything wrong with your sounder.

So my original definition of the "MSD," which was "Mucho Stinking Deep," wasn't that far off. I had no idea they had 200' limits. Thanks for the info!
