I may have to decide to transport a C25 w/trailer accross country. Any known transport companies with experience for fair price? May have to move it from (near)west coast to East coast (NC). I might fly then rent a truck or drive and do it myself. Sounds like everythings in good shape (haven't seen it yet). The cost of transporting vs self move w/gas etc.. vs buying local will drive the decision.

Any experiences out there? Just trying to get estimates right now.

Flying cost is mute since I've got more flyer miles than I will probably ever use.

I have had estimates in the $5000-$6000 range to transport a C25 from Buffalo to San Diego, without trailer, $3000-$4000 if I provide the trailer. Roughly 2$ a mile without a trailer, $1.50 a mile with trailer I have been told is a fair estimate. I have a Fin Keel, so figure a swinger may be less.

When I bought my '89 C-25WK last year, I was faced with the same problem - moving the boat from Virginia to California, and it didn't have a trailer. The quotes I got from commercial haulers were all in the $6000~$8000, which was out of the question. Luckily, I own a very capable tow vehicle, a '98 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup with the Cummins Diesel and 5-speed stick, and I was able to borrow a trailer from another Catalina 25 owner in my sailing club. My cost for the trip: $680 for fuel plus about $1800 for milage depreciation (6100 miles at 30 cents per mile). I had a pop-top cabover camper on the truck and slept in that for the ten nights of the trip, and showered at truck stops, so there were no motel bills. So, it cost about 1/3 what a commercial hauler would have charged. However, I was lucky in that I had the tow vehicle and was able to borrow a trailer - not everyone in the circumstance of having to move a boat across country has the equipment needed, and these people will have to contract the job out. As for the vacation time I had to use, I considered the trip as an adventure in it's own right. Every American should drive across the country at least once, just to see it with their own eyes instead of on a TV screen.
