A couple of days ago I noticed the main sail has a slight bulge, or sag, along the foot. I'd say it extended the length of the boom and maybe 4 inches above it.
The luff and outhaul were tight. The rest of the sail looked goood; however, there was a slight "midriff bulge" above the boom. (I'm referring to the sail, not the sailor ). Has my sail stretched over the years? What's going on here?
Hard to say without looking at the sail and how it was sheeted. There's often some extra material designed in there to allow the sail to carry a fuller shape down to the boom. This is carried to an extreme in 'shelf footed' mains that will literally have a 'bag' along the top of the boom.
That said, most mains will get some extra sag to them after a few years due to stretch too. Likely some mis-shape down next to the boom isn't not bothering things much... unless you're a racer.
Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts. I've been reading a lot lately about sail trim, and trying to improve my technique. I'm a cruiser, not a racer, so if the sail is stretched a bit I'm not overly concerned.
