Is there a trick to locking the motor mount in the down position? I havent fully investigated it but the two times I've shifted to reverse the motor lurches forward. Thanks.

Charlie, Depending on your type of mount this may be incorrect but my has a locking slot in the mount. A bar that slides up and down with the motor is pulled into the locking slot by a small spring. Check/replace your spring. However even if the spring is not working properly, you and manually side the bar into the locking position to keep the motor from moving when in reverse. If you can pass along your type of mount, it would help analyze the problem. RL
It looks like you're talking about the reverse lock on your outboard rather than your motor mount. What kind of outboard do you have? You need to make sure you flip the tilt selector into the locked position instead of the tilt position. You should try to tilt your motor after you lower it. If you can tilt it, it will kick up when you run the motor in reverse.

On my 8hp Merc, the tilt locks automatically when the throttle is turned/shifted into reverse and is released when the throttle is turned in the forward direction.
