Has anyone else experienced their boom pin (for lack of better term) working itself loose? What I'm talking about is the pin on the gooseneck that holds the boom. Mine keeps working it's way up until it comes free totally and the boom is, ummm, what's the term, loose footed. Not a good situation, especially when there is considerable wind. I have to check it from time to time when sailing. In the picture below you can see how it has started to work its way up. Am I missing something on my boat that is supposed to keep that pin in place?
thanks ya'll!!! Your expertise, advise and kindness is tremendously appreciated. Without the kind people on this site, my boat and my sailing ability would be suffering considerably.
Jeez, I've never noticed that this pin can come out!
To prevent this from happening, I would be inclined to drilling a hole through the pin just above the bent over boom tang and inserting a cotter pin to prevent it from popping up.
Without taking a close look at the situation... a couple ways come to mind.
Put some loctite on the pin drive it back in and see what happens.
Drive the pin back down, take a center punch and put a couple little 'dings' in the gooseneck right at the edge of the hole... it will probably keep things in place. (This process is called 'staking') Applying too much force in the staking makes for breaking tho.
I suppose the "Bristol" way would be to thru-drill the gooseneck and the pin and put a cotter pin in place.

It appears that your concern is with the vertical pin coming up through its holder. The suggestions that others have offered to control that will work. You might also try just glueing it in place. Locktite comes to mind but most any epoxy will do. Sometimes simpler is better. I'm now wondering what Catalina used to keep that pin from drifting. I'll be at the boat shortly and give a peek at mine.
It seems that the circular cotter pictured needs attention before that becomes a problem.
How is the line pictured employed? What is its function?
The pin on my 1988 tall rig has a flat oval surface larger than the tang, on one end. The pin is inserted with the oval piece at the top of the tang. The pin has a cotter key at the opposite end to keep it where it belongs.
