One of the New Years resolutions I made this year was to clean out my work shop. I was sure that the garbage can going to the curb could be kept full all year with little effort. So far I haven't been wrong. Last week I went through the old magazine cabinet. Does anybody remember the Hobie Hotline magazine? I had them all the way back to the mid 70's. I could barely roll the garbage can to the curb it was so heavy. Anyway, I also found a copy of West Marine's 1980 catalog. At that time WM had just 2 stores. The catalog was thin and weighed .44lbs. I didn't have to dig as deep to find the 1997 catalog. I pulled out all the wish lists stuck between the pages and it weighs 1.59lbs. Most of you have received the new 2002 edition by now. It comes in at a whooping 2.74lbs. West Marine now claims 240 stores. How did we survive those long winters with such skinny catalogs?

Ed I don't know how we did make it through the winters but Ill bet your trash man is wondering how he will make it. We have a weight limit on our cans here and if you fill it to much it will be waiting for you when you get home.
ed did you have the hobie hotline copies when they were on newspaper print? if so you are giving your age away. my first hobie was bought new in 1973 for $1200 which included the trailer. i bought 2 others after that. isn't it amazing the coast catamarans started with sandy banks, gary edwards, hobie and wayne scheaffer? am i giving my age away? and, can you believe that i live and sail on a small corp of engineers lake in southern illinois? dave holotgrave 5722 sk/tr
Dave, you have me by a few years. My first Hobie 16 was purchased in the winter of 1977. I remember it cost $2,200 with trailer. My wife and I wore out 2 H16's racing. I still have the third H16 in the side yard, not sailed very often these days. The oldest Hotlines I had were newspaper quality paper on the inside and glossy covers. I don't think the library needs 25 year old magazines, at least that is what my local library told me, mayby the new ones. Our garbage cans are on wheels and are lifted into the dumper with a big side arm device. No body lifts anything and one driver does it all.
My point here is that the inflation in size and weight of sailing equipment catalogs is in direct proportion to the cost of the toys they contain. As Dave pointed out a new H16 cost 12 boat units in 1973, 22BU's in '77 and in 2002 they are $7000??
