Does anyone know of a good source for cushions that can be used in the cockpit for a back rest? I was out sailing with a friend and we were healing for quite a while and found that our backs were starting bother us. I'm looking for a cushion that will cover the back rest part of the seats in the cockpit. Does anyone have these?
Thanks,
Steve Gravel Portsmouth, RI C25 - 'Lady Jane' SR/FK
I bought a package of 4 floating seat cushions at West Marine for $40. They also are life preservers and serve as throwables. They are white and blue. They came in a neat little net bag for storage and work perfectly as seat back cushions. Many other colors are available.

They also work as backrests up against the cabin or for those lazy sails, against the stern pulpit.
West was selling seat cushions with hinged backrest and for some unexplainable reason I didn't buy them. Everytime I'm out sailing and my back is complaining I find myself bending over looking for someone to give me a big BOOT. They were great in every way but not the color for my outfit. I was thinking about buying the blue units and having them recovered to match but where does it end? The recovering would equal the cost of the cushion. And so it goes.
I have two sport a seats...bought them at the sail expo in st. pete last year. Here's their link: http://www.sportaseat.com/
Since I bought them I rarely use the cockpit cushions I bought with the boat. West Marine sells them also (Taylor brand) and charge two for one price when on sale.
It sounds like the sport-a-seat is the seat of choice, but I was thinking of something I could snap down along the top of the seat back that would cover the edge and go part of the way down the back. This would be preferrable, because I wouldn't have to worry about moving the seat around when I'm tacking and it would provide a cushion to lean on when I'm healing 20-25 degrees. I think the sport-a-seat may be a little awkward in that situation.

I have 4 Sport-a-Seats and they're great for general cruising, but I generally don't use them on the windward side of the cockpit at higher heel angles because they just slide off and are occasionally in the way.
Although I don't wear it any longer, my cheap America's cup lifevest when worn provided an excellent comfortable backrest in the cockpit. Since I was wearing it, it came with me when I changed seats in the cockpit, it never slid off like cushions do, I never tripped over it, and...oh yeah,...it could also save my life!

I use throwable cusions, with one strap clipped to a lifeline with a carabiner. They can be slid fore and aft as you like, don't fall off when you're heeling, and can be unclipped and tossed quickly if someone goes overboard. Clip 'em to each side and there's one waiting for you when you change sides.
Al, I don't use them much, but I do break them out when there is more than 3 of us sailing. Put it out on the swap forum, I've seen folks sell um' there. Good luck!
A few years back I purchased a bean bag chair covered with sunbrella and the wife loves it. It's a bit pricey but very comfortable. Works well on the bow and cockpit area.
