What kind of windows does your boat have? 1977-1985 have aluminum-framed windows, 1986-1990 have flush mount Lexan windows. The process for resealing them when they start leaking is completely different. Actually, the flush mount windows rarely spring leaks unless the window pane itself is cracked, so I assume you have the older style. Catalina Direct sells a kit that contains new vinyl glazing channel and the right kind of sealant. Your alternative is a retrofit kit that imitates the flush mount windows, but the kit is pretty costly, about $200 per window.
Mike, Try using the search button at the top of the screen by the words "Sailor's Forum." You should be able to find lots of advice on this topic. I have a '79 with aluminum frames. I ran a heavy bead of silicone around the outside of the frames. It isn't pretty, but it is effective.
I have no idea whether my windows leak, I put snaps on a boom tent that fit the pop-top enclosure snaps. Keeps bugs out too, I have not had a single spider or wasp this year, nothing larger than a gnat.
Don't bother trying to goop up your existing windows. After you read all the posts about previous trials and either failure or gooped up boat......Do what I did.
Go to: Cruisingconcepts.com and for $675 you can have brand new lexan/acrylic smoked out windows that do not leak, and make you boat look like new.
The Catalina Direct porthole repair kit contains everything you'll need and includes well written directions. I think the key to this fix is to bring the windows home to disassemble, clean and reassemble them. That's the more difficult part of this repair and doing it on a work bench makes the task much easier. Took about 2 hrs to do 2 windows. If you redo the windows make sure you clean them thoroughly before applying the sealant and reassembling them. I did not use the window to boat caulk provided by Catalina Direct but used mobile home window repair tape instead as suggested by another owner. That works great and is much easier to use .. not messy, quick and effective. George Solemate
