Hi

I am thinking of buying a new outboard this off season. My present outboard is a 25" long shaft yamaha. Can I get by with a 20" model, any opinons are appreciated?

And is anyone up to date with the latest in legislation outlawing 2 stroke motors?

what horsepower are you thinking of - have you considered a 6HP ?

No I would not consider a 6hp. On the great south bay we get a lot of chop, I need something to get through this.

Sorry about my spelling before ( my fingers dont work so good anymore )but what about this new legislation with regards to (2) strokes. Will they be outlawed?

New 2-strokes are already outlawed in California... I think you'll see more states following suit and 2 strokes simply fading away.

You said your sailing venue gets a lot of chop. IMHO you need a 25" (XL)shaft. If I were buying right now I'd seriously check out the Nissan XL shaft 9.9
Lots lighter than the comparible Yamaha and Honda models.

Frank: I think you answered your own question. The shaft length is probably more important to you than the difference between 6 and 8 hp. Go XL. (No sixes I know of come with it.)

I haven't heard about legislation out here (or Federal), but Nissan dropped the 8 and 9.9 2-strokes. Manufacturers are working on high-pressure, low emission systems for big 2-strokes, but the technology might not scale down to our size.

Just out of curiosity, why are you considering a change in the first place? The Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust 4-stroke motor (this is what you have, right, or is yours a 2-stroke?) is one of the best outboards ever made for a sailboat in the Catalina 25 size and displacement class. Is your Yamaha worn out, or damaged and not economically repairable?

As for the 20" vs 25" question, it's best to stick with 25" on a Catalina 25 because of the high transom. As Frank Hopper said, if you are up on the foredeck, a 20" motor will be pulled out of the water, which is not good for the water pump impeller, even if the engine is just idling.

I suppose 2-stroke outboards are probably going to dissappear eventually due to simple economics, and Federal emmissions requirements, same as 2-stroke motorcycles did (I had a Yamaha RD-400 in the late 70's). A 4-stroke outboard of any given size gets 30 to 50 percent better fuel economy, and with gas approaching $2.50/gallon in many parts of the country, people are starting to think about fuel economy again. Of course, sales of big SUV's and other similar gas-guzzlers don't seem to be hurting yet.
