Under the decal registration numbers on our bow, we have discovered remnants of what appears to be old painted numbers.

I would like to get these off, without damaging the hull.

Suggestions?

There are various 'gelcoat safe' pint removers available from most marine suppliers... on WOTAM I 'erased' mine with some rubbing compound and elbow grease. Some light 400 grit wet sanding followed by rubbing compound probably would have been a bit quicker.

Just remember if you try to compound them off, the compound may work faster on the gelcoat surrounding the paint than the paint itself. I'd probably try a gelcoat-safe paint remover.

I used straight acetone. The old numbers had been there a long time. The whole job took about 45 minutes, port and starboard.

Interstrip 299E. I think it's by Interlux. It's little expensive but gelcoat safe, strong, and even takes varnish out of the gelcoat with a brass bristle brush. A little elbow grease required but won't cause damage.

Straight edged razor then Acetone to get what the razor could not and to clean the surface.

I use "Goof Off" to remove adhesive, caulk, and other gunk from the hull.
