Anyone else following the Vendee? Interesting race this year. First time all of the boats have made it more than a week. Front runners are days ahead of last race and it looks like they're going to blow right through the doldrums.

You can check it out at www.vendeeglobe.fr/uk (for english)
There is also a good discussion going on at www.sailinganarchy.com/forums - select the Vendee Anarchy forum.

I got to work on Ocean Planet during her refit - its fun to watch the race with a personal interest in one of the boats. We won't win but we're out there - a small miracle in itself.

Can you tell me a little about how you got to work on the boat and why? Tell me what you got to do and anything that is of interest.
I’m sure our readers would be interested.
Sorry but the deadline is soon.
Thank you.

Bruce Schwab's Ocean Planet is a "wooden boat!" Well, at least, she's a wood/epoxy laminate built right here in Portland, OR at Schooner Creek Boatworks. I worked there for a time in the 90s, building boats with this method, but OP came later.

Steve Rander, the owner of Schooner Creek, is quite a boat builder and very knowledgable sailor. His Wylie 70', RAGE, built by the same method, used to own the CA to HW record in the Pacific Cup....of 7 days and change, but that was before the new, canting keel super go-fasts of Disney, etc....that cost millions....

Go Bruce and Ocean Planet. Out here on the left coast....I am pulling for him and the boat!

Go, Bruce, go! What a great move sailing straight south to pick up the Southern Ocean ahead of his pack. He's sure to make up lost ground and pick up a few places within the next two days. Very exciting!

Cool, check out the pictures. Quite the setup. Like the tiller too. Is it me or do we not use sospenders/harnesses on these boats?

Bruce is up to 9th place and just below New Zealand, and Ellen is absolutely flying through the fleet.

My guy is out of it with a hole in his boat I found out. I was rooting for him because he spoke english on the audio and I don't speak French. But yeah, more power to them all.
