Just wanted to get some feedback with regards to going to a 20" shaft from a 25 I presently have.
I operate on the great South Bay of LI, where I do get choppy conditions. I do have an adjustable bracket. Even so when down (1) position from the bottom the motor does cavitate on occasion. Going all the way down I think would make it un comfortable to operate from the cockpit.
The conventional wisdom is to use a long a shaft as possible. If your 25" shaft cavitates your motor occasionally, the 20" shaft will cavitate a lot - possibly burning out your water pump prematurely.
"Quiet Time" came to me with a 20" Honda 7.5, and while the engine worked adequately on Folsom Lake, when I would take the boat down to San Francisco Bay or the San Joaquin River delta, it became obvious that 20" was not enough as the prop would cavitate in even relatively small waves. I replaced the old Honda with a 25" shaft Yamaha 8 a few months ago, mostly to get electric start, and it seems to work well, although I have not been able to try it out in choppy conditions yet, due to the premature closure of Folsom Lake Marina last July (the marina closure actually took place before I got the new motor installed).
