what is:
Displacement to length ratio
and
Sail area to displacement ratio

is there a magic number to look for that classifies a preformance boat and a sluggish cruiser?
what i mean by magic number is, i know with capsize ratio i can look for a number below 2.0 and i have an idea that the boat will right herself easily.

Hey Frank,

You keep this info on a little sheet of paper in your wallet?

I doubt that Catalina knows all this.

Both of the numbers you are looking at are in many ways obsolete. Modern construction and sail control have rendered both of them meaningless. As regards a Cat 25 remember designed displacement is wildly diferent from actual displaement or the weight of the boat. In any case D/L is Displacement (in tons of 2240 lbs.) divided by (Length times .01)cubed. and SA/D is sail area in sq. ft. divided by Displacement (in 2240 lb tons) to the 2/3 power.
so for a Catalina 25
D/L is 5000/2240 or 2.23 divided by .01 times 25 to the third power or .0156 = 143
SA/D is 270 (standard rig) divided by 5000/2240 to 2/3 power = 158

Racing ratings tell you how the boat actually performs in comparison with other boats. The ratings "assume" that all the rated boats are being sailed by skippers & crews of average skills. The ratings aren't exact, however. Some boats are easy to sail above their ratings, and others are not. Nevertheless, the PHRF number is a good guide.
