Wade,

From what others have said, the cost is around $4,000.00 (U.S.) for the Swing to Wing conversion.

Hi Wade,

Did you mean convert swing to wing (as Don's answer addresses), or did you mean swing to fin (as you wrote in your question)?

There is no fin kit and I do not know if the Catalina 25 fin is worth going out of the way for anyway. It is not a performance foil. If you can find a J-24 fin it might be worth the hassle.

There always seems to be a ton of fins for sale and often quite reasonably. I doubt the project would be worth the effort. Any modification CAN be done if you have enough time and money, ron srsk Orion SW FL

"Grok" - now that's a word I haven't heard used in casual conversation in quite a while. What a coincidence seeing this post today! I just happen to be in the middle of re-reading SIASL this very week. I recently came across a copy of the "un-expurgated" version of the story that Mrs. Heinlein compiled and published a couple of years after her husband "discorporated and joined The Old Ones". According to the preface, it contains about 20K more words than the "censored" version that was published originally and that I first read in about 1970 when I was in high school, and that I was too young at the time to really understand the finer points of, especially the religious and political maneuverings involving the Government and the Fosterites. At 48, I guess I am appreciating the story a lot more than I did at 14.

Stranger in a Strange Land? It's been a long time since I read that too. I didn't know they had a censored version. Was this in the name of political correctness?
If you like that book, you will probably like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Of course you probably already read it.

Getting back to the fin keel issue, let us know if you find a kit for that.

I just looked it up... It'd be about a thousand pounds too light and not engineered for the C-25 hull in any way. The C-25 wing conversion is probably the only safe, specifically designed solution around.

In theory, and I stress the theory, you COULD rotate the keel to full extension and, having ground out the area at the head of the keel in the trunk, pack it full of marinetex or epoxy slurry, drill four/five heavy bolts thru the trunk/keel combination, reinforce the trunk head on the inside of the hull with web lamination, and have a five foot fixed keel. Why anybody would want to take this job on would be beyond me, but - as mentioned earlier- with enough energy, materials, and boat units, anything is possible, Ron in SW FL
